Philips A5-PRO "Armin Van Buuren Collaboration" (Owners and impressions)

Guys, chill out. Some BA drivers will change with use. Some will not. Our brain will adapt to different sound signatures too. There is no universal truth that applies to all headphones and all IEMs due to the incredibly wide variety of transducers in use.

I reckon: Give your impressions, but importantly list the type of music you were listening to, and how loud you listen. Those things have the biggest effect above all.

Thank you for your impressions so far Baycode

I'm excited to know if they keep on improving!

I have to say they are much better now (passed approx 100 h point). I have A-B'ed with my Fidelio X2 and sound is very initimate, more in your face, slightly warmer than X2 and fuller sounding. Also clarity is very close to X2 clarity now. A-B'ed with Pro DJ100, ProDJ100 sounded like a toy... Although clarity retrival of DJ100 still amazes me (but only on the upper mid and high range).

I have to A-B more to make everything sure. Soundstage and especially ss depth is very good for a closed HP. I really started to like listening to alternative rock, pop rock, rock, alternative, electronica, downtempo and chillwave with these A5Pro. Sounds excellent. Very musical.  Need more time to get more opinion...

I am generally writing without mentioning my music types or listening levels, and/or listing what I am exactly doing because these are quick impressions. Sorry but I can't write everything for the quick impression replies...

If any of you like to see some reviews of me please check the link on the signature.

I will certainly review these...

Since A5-Pro is a bit too bassless for my tastes I wonder if I should give A3 a try hoping it takes a bassier approach, could right now get it for 20€ off + free shipping so 179 instead of 199€. But that's quite a leap of faith hoping it to be what I want it to be hehe.

Yeah, would be nice to have impressions of them too. I would guess they are very much like the A5pro but without the leather etc.

From memory, the A5pro is bass-tilted but quite linear. I.e. no bumps or resonances. That could be an advantage if you like to eq and customize your bass.

Fortunately I'm not looking to be EQing other than digiZoid's ZO bass boost since the built in Realtek software EQ is crap and I'd need to find a hardware EQ if so but I still like a "bumped" response to be there to begin with. I also prefer a more peaky bass curve over linear since that leads to more bloated bass response, I'm more into the feeling of attack/punch/slam, fast impactful punchy response rather than hearing bunch of quantity (sub)bass rumbling which a more pointy bass curve peaking roughly around 80Hz or so brings from my experience.

I guess Ultrasone Signature DJ is more up my alley but I it's 729€ and I don't like the comments regarding a slight midrange recession by several people.

I see what you mean. I used to like that sound and still do occasionally. The Ultrasone ed8 did very well in that respect. I don't have access to them anymore but they could produce a very good explosion in the sub bass region. Probably a lot of distortion but nevertheless very enjoyable.

If you like sub bass thump I think Philips SHL3300 could be your cup of tea. They are like one quarter of the price compared to A3 Pro or even less.

I don't think SHL3300 will satisfy me in terms of sound quality though, don't get me wrong, I like my bass thump but I care about equally much about the rest too. In the quest for the holy quality basshead grail so to speak. Signature DJ's, Fostex TH-900, JVC DX1000 etc comes to my mind but yet none sounds like they are PERFECT matches in one way or another to my preferences, it's more like some aspects of the headphones needs to be combined with each other. ^^

Like Signature DJs to me have the perfect bass curve with perfectly balanced mid and subbass giving a nice thump action without bloatiness but seem to have a slight spike in the highs making the mids take slight bit backseat while Fostex again seems also too V-shaped, a bit too bright for my tastes and JVC seems sliiiightly bit warm (rolled of highs) and slightly bit subbass skewed and what people describe as more laid-back spacious sound when I like a more forward / in-my-face kind of sound which neither offer (Q40 for example does but it's not the holy grail in sound quality though for sure, soundstaging/imaging/airiness in particular but it has a sound signature that I find very appealing to me though)

These slightly peaked my interest, so having a 25% coupon floating around ordered 225€ from Philips Shop.. maybe next week some impressions and measurements. Curious to hear how they compare to Senn HD8's..

Too bad amazon.es doesn't deliver, there's returned ones for 160€..

Doesn't look too shabby at all! About ~7dB bass boost which is a bit more than I had expected based on the feedback recieved although this is slightly bit midbass skewed leading to a fairly snappy/punchy response (perfect for ZO amp which would balance out the subbass vs midbass balance). Timbre balance looks better than Sennheiser HD8 and fairly neutral (average level of the highs is reasonably on similar amplitude as the average out of the midrange).

That slight ~3dB decrease at the lower mids is slight negative thing to my eyes but 3dB is pretty minor and shouldn't result in such a huge loss of phatness of midrange stuff (male vocals, EDM leads in particular).

Hmm, this graph got me slightly bit more interested than I was before.
