Hi all,

I recently purchased an AKG K240 Monitor from an eBay vendor and I found that the felt/foam pieces covering the drivers are deteriorating and gross to handle.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any replacement parts I can purchase, or something similar. The felt/foam pieces themselves are about 9.5 cm in diameter. I was hoping to get some original parts to keep the headphone in genuine originality, but if need be, I can always use third party sources.

Apart from that, I've been using it without the felt/foam earpieces, leaving the drivers exposed, and it sounds really good!

Thank you in advance,

Yeah I like that 240M also.

You can buy the proper AKG inner foams from AVSHOP.ca, as well as actual AKG pad replacements.

Avshop  were great I ordered both ( 2 sets of pads and I think 2 sets of inner disks ) and they brought them in to their catalog from a request we had in the Canadian thread, so also top notch customer service!

it is not called foam but this.

This corresponds exactly with the AKG service manual part number also so you are not getting some unknown sound affecting stuff from a 3rd party.

enjoy those!

BTW it sure is nice to get a brand spanking new set of pads on those...but yours look ok unless they are a bit on the hardened up side of things.
I carefully used a vaccum with a brush end to get rid of the bad foam bits.

Oh, that's exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much for providing the links!

I just took apart the K240 Monitor and it looks like I'll need to replace part 16 as well (the foam ring above the driver assembly and below the metal cover). The foam in there is deteriorating as well, so I took a vacuum and flathead screwdriver to knock out the loose/broken up foam bits.

Oh that foam is pretty much identical to fish tank filter foam available at any decent pet store! I know from experience because someone sent me some and I used it to replace the same crumbled stuff that was inside a K240 Sextett of that vintage. Near if not a perfect match if I recall correctly.
I suppose it does SOMETHING in there or they would not have bothered. I guess mix up some stray reflections?
In fact I know a German ebay pad seller that has that in his listings along with pads.

Save some $ and get some of that locally.

These K240M are great and really well built tough as nails, I fall asleep with them on a fair bit. Disconcertingly lightweight also.
Nice to see some intact badges there on yours.
Are you running them straight from  that DAP? or are you using an amp also?

Oh it really is that simple? The stuff that fell into the garbage can felt and did look really close to the fish tank filter material, but I wasn't too sure since the foam literally just crumbled in my hand upon pinching it and I thought it was just due to old age that the foam looked the way it did. Because of that I too was wondering what that foam does since it's really porous and it doesn't seem like the dampening material headphones usually have. I was thinking it was more of a dust guard though since the foam and thus drivers can be exposed to the outside environment.

The badges are intact yup, but they have some caked-on, rusty-colour adhesive residue underneath it that doesn't seem to come off with isopropyl alcohol. I'm not too sure what to make of it, but it doesn't look like it's going anywhere.

In that photo yes I was running it directly from the iPhone 4S. I was actually surprised at how it sounded considering it's rated at 600 Ω and 88 dB/V (I think it's per volt since AKG rates their other headphones like this). I've been using it mostly with the ODAC/O2 though and the difference between them is as expected. The ODAC/O2 sound pretty spacious believe it or not. I actually like the K240 more than the K 701 in many aspects: more bass presence, warmer-sounding, more accurate-sounding midrange, more rounded soundstage, and a better fit on my head.

Did my best to take a decent quick macro shot, but this bit measures 50cm by 120 cm for a scale reference. ( no inches on the ruler :) )
After taking into account deterioration on the old stuff it is really close.

Surely you meant to measure in millimeters and not centimeters. My ruler isn't long enough to measure 50 cm. : p
Thank you for the measurements though, that should help a lot!

So I got official AKG replacement parts for the coarse foam inner ring that goes inside the earpieces as well as the foam/fabric driver insert covers that go underneath the earpads. Spectrum Audio is based in the USA, so shipping wasn't quite as expensive as from AV Shop in Canada. You do have to place a minimum order of $50 though since this is a manufacture drop shipment. Each of the above replacement parts comes as a single unit, so you have to order two of the same item for a matching pair.

I had to cut the foam rings since I don't currently have a soldering iron to desolder the wires and the foam has a very tight fit within the earcup. Just for your information.
