Hey whirlwind, thanks again for the RS1i's, these headphones are super comfortable even though I do not have Grado ears. I am listening to John Coltrane's "My Favourite Things" (1961), and wow, sounds soooooo good!
John Coltrane is kinda sorta really really great. I would listen to him through am old Victrola if I had to.

What speed, rpm's, does it play at, and does it work at all?

It plays 78s, and it is in mint condition, I even have all the original needles. I have about 200 78rpm records, and a little more than a 1000 (three zeros) 33,1/3rpm records. I have a Sony turntable for the other vinyl. Working at a University Radio Station has its privileges :p :p

I got my new PS500e last week, and I have been running them from my MacBook Pro through a BifrostUber/ Asgard2. They are very different compared to my original pair of PS500, that were too dull sounding for my old ears. The new version is open, with precice bass, glowing mids and great highs. I own a nice pair of RS1i, several AKGs and Sony for work ( I am a professional musician) and a collection of in-ears, my latest aquisition there was a pair of Shure SE846.
I had ordered a Set of RS325e for auditioning a few weeks back, but had to return them because the treble extension was just too much for me, but I figured that the new driver could work very well in the 500. And that is what it does. Very well. Magic. First Post. Just had to chip in. These things are amazing. Thank you, Grado.

SixWing - your impression is spot on my book. I had no previous experience with grado but have owned akg (271 and q702) along with a host of senns (first was the 414) among others and 1) the 500e brought out my first post and 2) after weeks of comparing the rs1e, rs2e, and rs1i with these I have yet to hear a more accurate, musical, and fun representation - and that's just from my. MBP/iPad.

There's a really good comparison of the 225i vs e on the TTVJ grado loaner program thread that really articulately shares my (albeit new) experience with the grado lineup but maybe outsider perspective helps.

Jay, sorry to hear about your misfortune…but then again, as long as you have to stay resting, its a good time to take full advantage of the GS1Ke's

Hey, I'm thinking of getting the P500e's or the RS1e's.
I have the RS1i's.

Could you possibly break out some of the differences you heard
between the P500e and the RS1i's?

Thanks

Certainly (although definitely hat tipping to others that have also dug into this territory a bit as well):

  1. RS1i: bright, on stage, treble happy (but still mostly silky), bass extension solid fast but back from the scene, relatively narrow sound stage (instruments), great spacing of notes, best for classic rock, some jazz, some acoustic. This is what you want to listen to Rolling Stones with
  2. PS500e: more soulful but also more realistic. Simply the most natural sounding reproduction I've ever heard (note - this isn't the same as neutral). Described as "two rows back" which I think is very accurate, as you'll hear differences in a grand piano played in a concert hall vs played in a jazz club vs. played in a studio. Silky, smoother treble but the most accurate symbols I've ever heard (ditto on sax and trumpet). Also really good for classic rock (but different approach), amazing for small group jazz, new and old folk, and even really well suited for classical (although better for concertos/chamber work rather than big orchestral work - not enough sound stage). If you listen to any of the John Coltrane Quartet/Columbia recordings you won't be able to return these (ditto with some newer indie folk work)

Well, I think I hear less of the Ps500e than of the Rs1i, in effect they are getting out of the way more than the RS1i's. Don't get me wrong though, they are both extremely musical Headphones, and I am still burning in the 500s, so I don't have a definitetive preference as of now. I have used the AKG Q701/702Anni for extensive monitoring and mixing in our studio, but I think that the Grados are more revealing, letting me get in the nooks and crannies of my music much faster, at lower volumes, and with less demanding amplification. Does this make sense? Another good point I find is the termination of the 500 in a 1/8 inch, makes it really nice to use straight out of a portable device, with unexpectetly precise results, without the bulk of the adapter. Hope this helps?

Hi, first time poster here : )

I recently purchased the RS1e and I love them. I think they may save my hearing because these things sound amazing at low volume, wish i discovered Grados earlier ; )

I am having a hard time on deciding what Amp to get.  I currently have the schiit stack, magni/modi that I use with my HE-400s.  The RS1e sounds great through them, would it be worth upgrading?  I like Schiit and would like to stick with them, what are your thoughts?

I was thinking the Asgard would be a good amp because of the low gain switch, I am thinking that would work well with the RS1 because it does not require that much power to sound great.

I also heard the RA1 is great with the RS1 but i would like an all around amp to use with my HE-400 and if i decide to get something even better.

Next thing to look into would be a tube amp.  I have never listened to a tube amp before so I don't really know where to start.

Any thoughts, or is it too early to tell for the E series?

Also thanks for all the awesome advice, your posts have influenced all of my purchases and I could not be happier. This community seriously provides some priceless information.
