The JVC FX850..Woodie perfection?. (A review)

Very helpful and very keen observations kendric, thank you. I went with the Shure SE846 stock cable for durability of the cable and like you said I have had high respect for the sound of stock cables.

You're welcomed. :beerchug:

I might stick with the 93spec longer than I thought, with both cable and the woodie burning in, I am liking the slightly mid-forward balance that has began to settle down, something guilty which I have always want since the FX700 (another thanks to dsnuts once again for the burn-in advice on stock cables)

Might get the 93pc to substitute stock cable without major sonic alterations and thats for now.

I may contact Treoo for an audition session, despite hefty price tags the Effect CC Piccolino and especially the famed Whiplash TWau Gold-Plated Silver just seems tempting to try out even if I am most likely not buying unless they really had a big 'WOW' factor improvement which I am reserving comments regarding that, along with whatever dac/amp offerings they have for me to try out with my DX90 pairing.

Hope I will be able to make time to try out via Treoo Singapore before reporting back with my impressions.

Im surprised all these cables fit at all, had no luck with mmcx cables meant a for UE/Shure/Westone

I haven't tried many MMCX cable, but I successfully drove FX850 in balanced using the Shure cable.
And the MMCX connection is just fine, clicks well, no problem plugging and unplugging.

Yep these things fit, except 2 cables that I have encountered - namely New-Westone's stock MMCX cable which just couldn't even fit in; the other being my first pair of Fiio SE-RC1 cable that couldn't fit in for the right-side connector.

Even when I swapped for the 2nd pair, connection seems half-baked although I do not perceive any negative change to the sound.

So far Shure stock cables, Whiplash TWag V2 and the 93spec all clicked and fit just really fine and actually latches on with stability.

Had no trouble with the Fiio cable, fit easily, but didn't find the sonic changes entirely to my liking. Burning it in now, see if it changes (seems to add a "tizziness", takes out some richness, to my ears.)

I believe your 'tizziness' is the same 'grittiness' I have heard from the Fiio too.

Thats why I felt the 93spec retains the lofty quality of the FX850 much more so.

The TWag V2 would sound more like a direct technical upgrade from the Fiio SPC but its is so much more pricier imo which is not worth it for my preference.

I found the biggest improvement I made in these was playing them through a good amp. I got the attenuator cable (UE900), plugged it into my Ray Samuels HR-2, line in from iBasso DX90, sounded fabulous imo. Hadn't liked them as much before...I could hear what the fuss was about, but sounded a bit "too rich" (used to be you couldn't be too...), sliightly thick, some detail got obscured. The above set up cleaned it up, still great bass and instrumental tone, took it up to the notch where seemed, if I only had to live with 1 iem, these would do fine, thank you...
(DX90 into ALO National not bad either...thinking of other Ray Samuels or iFi portable amplification for these babies...and my other babies, of course:))

You should try to drive the FX850 in balanced ;-)

I own both the dn1k and 850s and although I love both, the 850s overall timbre/sound Sig I enjoy more. I would say it's the presentation. They will only get better with time. Mine are still improving although I have many hours on them already. Finding what they are really capable is the fun part bcuz they scale up better too. I felt a bit disappointed with Mine until they opened up. And then opened up somemore. And thats on stock cables. acoustics, pianos, strings, sound incredible, they are textured and layered, gives it body a natural timbre. But the d1nk I feel may have a slightly wider stage and sound very good too, crisp, a bit brighter but not harsh unless pushed or bcuz of source material. very close runner up if you have the cash get both but can't go wrong with either. I'm just glad I own both, they are each great performers.

I was really impressed with FX850 when I tried it with balanced amp. Significantly improved. Also the 2K Tips from DUNU DN-2000 improves the clarity of FX850.
Give your DN1K a little treat, get the secret recipe to let it shine and shows it's true potential, the JVC EP-FX8 eartips. You'll love it

Now now earfonia, just here I am thinking that da legendary japanese wagnus cable ain't has a thing on me because its only available in balanced connectors.

Now you have dug quite the old bones from under my rug.

Not that I actually mind if price of a wagnus cable may or may not equals up the price of a few 850s summed up.

Just need to source for a worthy and synergistic balanced amp that doesn't seems to absurdly be unfitting of the wagnus.

I used to work at a headphone store that started at a small heartland area where my boss had this naim audio setup with cardas' s top-of-the-line interconnects-

Its was absolute love for naim's domestic full setup's house sound soo much with the right pairings.

(Right over the top of my head high up and front-to-back spatial cues on the Ultrasone Edition 8 was one that I have never ever heard it achieved even close on any other setups nor heard the Edition 8 did anywhere as close on other pairings) .. but while wagnus were expensive, the naims goes further overboard towards the north of the price point with nearly a 5-digit figure on the entire setup. (So I don't think I will just strike a lottery and be able to afford them)

Hope Jaben has the wagnus sample in MMCX connector, if the overall balanced setup makes 850 scales well enough to stave off the 6 drivers elites and fitears, a small gleam of possibility thanks to its wooden unit wildcard, then I won find this target absurd.

And now Jaben adds to the list of places where I need to audition / window match-making with the woodies (anyway I will need to go back once my JH13 Freqphase returns from servicing, could do with the opportunity to audition their available balanced amps - ushered through none other than the creme de la creme balanced Wagnus cable demo.

*gets bashed by dsnuts because my nonsensical cable fetish/maniac is acting up again*

Never tried Wagnus before... sounds like a fantastic cable

My balance amp is not those 4 figures, only the affordable Yulong A28, which I couldn't recommend for those who is going to use the unbalanced headphone output, because the unbalanced headphone output is not even as good as the headphone output of my Yulong DA8. But the balanced output is pretty good, worth the money.

And I didn't have 'expensive' cable for balanced MMCX, only cheap Shure 1440 cable that I cut and terminate with 4 pin XLR.

But that setup was good enough to make FX850 wowed me
