Good questions. You're making me work here.

First off, the X7i (50 Ohms) is harder to drive than the IM03 (34 Ohms), and yet my Galaxy does just fine. Plenty of power and dynamics. There really aren't any IEMs that can't be driven sufficiently by smartphones. You have to get up to around 100 Ohms before they even struggle.

The FiiO X5 delivers, yes, a lot more power, but it's in the quality of the sound that makes it worth getting off the smartphone for your music listening. It's a lot smoother, more musical, with a much wider soundstage. Of course, the iPhone sounds better than the Samsung Galaxy, but even the iPhone fails to compete against a good DAP. Though, some will argue that fact.

In terms of IEM quality, the IM03 honestly mops the floor with the X7i. The Klipsch is dead flat neutral. Some folk love that. You, being a BEATS fellow, probably won't. I quite like the X7i. It sounds amazing for a single driver earphone. The IM03 has three drivers. And friend, let me say, you can bloody well hear it. Also, it's less neutral than the X7, sounding warmer, thanks to a lot more bass. The three drivers create a layering effect to the music which washes over you, immersing you in the audio. I'd never heard anything like it before.

The airy quality refers to a balance of treble and bass that opens up the mids so they breathe and feel properly exposed. I'm not sure you'll ever understand until you hear this phenomenon yourself. I know I struggled with it until I had a really nice set of headphones. Transparency is kind of a meaningless word we all use way too much.

All it means is the gear renders a sound that's so unobtrusive that the equipment simply disappears, leaving only you and the music. There are many degrees of transparency.

The most profound praise I can give the IM03 is that I am still enraptured by them, whenever I get a chance to use them again. I've since moved on to the JH Audio Angie, which is a $1099. Angie is certainly better in every way, however... there ain't nothing wrong with my IM03.

mann I bought the x7i a while back, but had to return it cause the flat cable was ridiculously microphonic, and there was a lack in strain reliefs all over.... (heard a lot of issues in terms of build (which seems to be consistent with all klipsch products.... sighhh even the s4s (which was so widely regarded everywhere else had a ridiculously flimsy straight angle jack... it was honestly a joke.....

plus I didn't care for the remote, I thought it was oddly placed and was kind of bulky.

but those ceramic shells omg... I got the black/ onyx colour (and I'm usually a sucker for white) but those x7i.......
ksc75smile.gif

they were a bit lacking for me in the bass (back then, which was 3-4 years ago I think) at least in comparison to the s4s I had then

but they had a nice liquid midrange which was quite mesmerizing....

Would like to grab a pair again someday (once they get rid of that flat cable, and the ios remote (or at least come out with a version for *non apple* compatible devices, and those strain reliefs)

anywaysss after that little rant! @PinkyPowers I would love to have a listen to the Im03s (they seem to be right up my alley), the im02 sounded interesting, but I don't like that its so picky with players, and being that neutral... well it just didn't seem as interesting as the im03 which seems to be slightly warmer...

ahhh why so expensive though.... I know its a triple BA but still.....

Thank you for  your detailed explanation, sounds like some delicious three layer chocolate cake, I feel the urge to try them myself and I have been able to manage book an audition, I think that is the only way to find out the differences.

I agree with everything you said about the X7. The good and the bad.

The microphonics are quite strong. I must use a shirt clip every time I put them in. On the plus side, they are the smallest, lightest, most comfortable IEMs ever. Because of this, I still use them everyday for podcasts and audiobooks.

It's a shame to use such a nice pair of phones in that way, but I have much better options for music.

We are both on the same page lol. Just different words ? To clarify, the 04 is darker yes, also more bass than 03, which makes it good for bass lover.....now, specifically just "bass-head" ? I think IM-50 is the best, and strictly talking within ATH IM series

To my ears, the IM03 is brighter, and has slightly less mid-bass quantity. The IM04 is definitely darker, a tad more fluid in the midrange, with heavier and stronger lows. The IM03 is better suited for EDM music, IMO, with punchier bass and a more sparkling and energetic treble region. I'd get the IM03 if its highs weren't so harsh. At times, they were sibilant, and very fatiguing to listen to. In contrast, the IM04 has a more laid-back, smooth, and forgiving sound.

I just picked up a pair of IM-04's and I just wanted to say they sound great just running straight out of my S6.   Now that's not to say I don't think they couldn't gain a lot more ummpph from a nice Amp (I haven't ever thought about picking one up before as this is my first really nice set of IEM's) but I have zero complaints just plugging them straight into my Galaxy S6 other than being a tad quite unless I turn the volume to full.

Better amp or DAP will give it more soundstage and 3rd dimensional field. I run it through ZX2 and it is one of the most immersive experience I ever had in IEMS (I don't own those jh Layla or anything though). The same can be said for 03, but 04 does even more so because the illusion of that bass, though in turn, it is a little darker. But if you were to upgrade the cables as well, the warmth sound will open up nicely and a little more revealing. I upgraded my cable to 7Nocc as well.

But all in all, out of iPad Air 2, it sounds just good.

Interesting, I had no idea the cables even mattered! I'll have to check that out.

Uhmmm cables need to come last in the chain, it improvements can only be observed if you have good source, like DAP or AMP first though. Make sure to buy a good reputable one too.

I've been looking for somewhere to buy a Leckerton UHA-6S .MKII as I've heard good thing about it w/ low Ohm IEM's from multiple sites.   I just wish I could pick one up new from their page...

What app are you using? The default apps fro music by Samsung are crap for music. Try Poweramp, the best music amp on Andriod, your music will come alive, you can boost the volume, you will never go back to Samsung app again.

That is interesting I've mostly been using Spotify on Extreme quality because I heard bad things about the stock player when i get home today I'll have to load some music straight to my phone.
