Uh-oh, George is here! Took ya long enough.

I've recommended the FSP to you at least once. Definitely worth trying, but depending on the size of your ears, it may not be comfortable. (Fit me perfectly, though.) There's a ton of info in this thread and elsewhere, so I doubt anything will be posted that someone hasn't already mentioned in the past.

Too bad I couldn't get that $400 HD 800! (Had to cover living expenses instead.)

The HD 650 is pretty cool. Probably my third favorite headphone so far, with the FSP still at #1.

this really encourages me to try FSP... i think i should, but i really have big ears... more like out of human realm ears... but i think that before actually testing i am not going to know...

  @dakanao

This is interesting. The HD 650 actually has occasional mid-range resonance / harshness too. Go figure.

That's strange, since the HD 650 is said to have one of the smoothest mids ever..

Or maybe they're burning in? Maybe my Spirit Pros are burning in as well? I don't know...

I'm not listening to them right now. Right now I'm listening to the Ostry KC06a IEMs, since I'm not in the mood for a headphone that's uncomfortable after a few minutes and/or with a harsh sound right now.

I EQ'ed the bass down with the KC06a, and now they're more enjoyable than the Spirit Pros imo, cus they actually let me listen to the music more, instead of focusing on that ''harshness''. They're still a bit harsh, but definitely less than the Spirit Pros.

They're also a lot more comfortable.

Yeah, it's only occasional harshness in the mids -- less often than the FSP. The overall sound of the HD 650 is smooth and warm, though thankfully not as dark as I expected. But the mids seem to be recessed. Some vocals are too bassy, for example. (Then again, the FSP also had that problem at times.) It excels with bright recordings. Sounds totally natural every once in awhile, but not often enough. I more often find myself wanting a neutral reference headphone instead...

So I just listened to the song Twista - Overnight Celebrity in 320 kbps, and I actually heard depth in the soundstage. In the couplet when he's rapping, his voice moves out slightly to the front, and after a few lines his voice returns noticable to the back.

I'm not sure exactly which part you're referring to but i don't hear any noticeable shift in vocal positioning. The only difference i can hear is in the 1st and 2nd verse he's front and center where as the 3rd verse his voice comes from both sides.

Here's an interesting question for Spirit Pro owners:

Which headphones above its price range do you like less?

Here's my list:
beyerdynamic DT 880 Edition 600 Ω
HIFIMAN HE-400i
Sennheiser HD 650
Sennheiser HD 700

(The list would probably be a lot longer, but my journey into high-end audio is only beginning...)

The HD700 is an amazing headphone and had a lot of amazing characteristics but was ultimately unlistenable due to the treble peak. Some people don't have issues with it but with the rigs I've heard it with and the music I listen to, the FSP is better for the sheer reason that it's listenable to.

Ironically, the treble was not a problem for me with the HD 700. I disliked it for other reasons, which I will not state here to avoid flame wars. lol

But yeah, it's interesting how even after hearing headphones with superior technicalities, the FSP still wins out due to having a more coherent overall sound.
