Refurb Macbook Airs start at $780ish from Apple.  Chromebooks are always on sale for around $200.  I'd start with an Air, though...

I'd wait. New Air is coming out in a few months, the current Airs will plummet in price.

Get a real cheap notebook/laptop (~100$) to hold him over this BF, then get an Air when the new ones come out. That's what I'm doing.

Also the current ones don't even have a retina display.

Keep an eye on Amazon. If I remember right, they usually have deals on HFi-580 and M50s for BF (the two are the biggest competitors in that headphone class imho). You'll prob be able to snag one ~100$. Just keep refreshing the lightening deals Wed-Mon next week

I grabbed my HFi 580s for about 110 two years back (Current is 170$)

I saw those. 2014 models. Not sure I should start with something that nice judging by how the iPhone and mini get treated though....lol. Thanks all the same for the recommend. It's a nice option. I could give him my 2012 MBA and upgrade :D

Right now I keep checking Amazon daily deals about once every couple of hours. Is that frequency going to be enough or do I need to up my game?

I've wanted M50s for about 2 years now, but settled for a Sennheiser 439 instead since M50s costed a ton in India. I've been in the US for the last 3 months and bought a measly Sennheiser 201 refurb for $15 to make do till BF, and I can't stand it any longer! :frowning2:

Now that there's a newer model (M50X), I had decided on going for that one. Is it more likely that there are going to be bigger discounts for M50/M50s than M50X, though? If that is the case, does the bargain justify settling for M50s over M50X?

Interesting.....so you're saying that if all 3 were about the same price, the Aurvina would be last in your opinion? Do you prefer one of the other two over the other?
I was under the impression that the Aurvina 3 rivaled the high priced iems. I guess I was wrong. I was looking for an iem that could. Would the TTPOD T 1E, or Ostry K06a be that good? If not, maybe I should go with something like the Fidue A83.........I already have several iems that are moderately good (~$150 and down). Now I want to upgrade, but, at a good deal........I fear that the TTPOd and Ostry would not be a upgrade.....only more of the same.

The A71 is getting a lot of good buzz ($99).

Nah you should be good. Keep in mind that the best deals won't come till the next week. Also Amazon will show you which lightening deals will come up in several hours (a day if I can remember) so you can prepare for it.

I would definitely go for the m50x, mostly because of the detachable cable. Also I hear they're more comfortable.
If there is 50$+ price difference I would get hesitant for sure since thats about a third of their total price.

Although you will get the upgrade bug very fast. Look into the DT770's for a similar headphone. Not much more expensive and they'll hold you over longer.

Good luck to your wallet :D

Without getting into too much detail, as this is the deals thread, yes, I'd say that's how I'd rank them. I would take the Ostry K06A first and then the TTPOD T1E.

If you're interested, you should look them up. There are dedicated threads to each in the forum.

But as a brief summary:

K06A, first thing that you notice is the crazy great sense of space and separation. Sometimes phones that get this open can also sound thin and harmonically threadbare. And they may be somewhat dry and analytical. These aren't. While they're not lush, they are musical and if anything tend very, very slightly to a tiny bit of warmth. But not the warmth that clouds things up; these things are crazy open sounding. Timbre is good, and great dynamic contrast. Great tone and timbre combined with holographic sense of space, they have become one of my favorites.

T1-E, very natural sounding. By that I mean things just sound "right". Whereas the Aurvaunas are more upfront with not much of a sense of instrumental separation or natural space, the T1-E has a very natural sounding perspective. the soundscape is laid out in front of you in a much more natural and realistic way. Timbre is very good and natural, too. It's not nearly as holographic as the K06A, but sounds perhaps more natural in that regard.

Both have more dynamic contrast than the Aurvanas. It makes them more lively, exciting, and involving IMO. Aurvauna sounds held back and tame in comparison.

Also, both have a good sense of weight and body to the notes whereas the Aurvanas tend to sound a little soft and diffuse.

I still think the Aurvana is a great IEM for the price, just that these two do so much more for me in the same price range (the TTPOD T1-E was around $49 on Amazon when I bought them, the Ostry K06A was $65 from the same source).

Sorry, I know nothing about the Fidue A83, so can't comment, there.

Anyhow, those are just a few observations from my listening. You should definitely read up on them if they sound interesting to you.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the Beyerdynamic. :)
I found a link to this deal somewhere somewhere. I have no idea how good the NVX ES10S are supposed to be (or how much they're really worth) though.

Thanks, waynes world.
A71 vs FIDUE A83........quite a price difference ($99 vs $280). Can anyone comment on whether the A83 is good enough to cost almost 3x more?

The dual dynamic drivers typically don't match in the clarity department against BAs but I've never tried both a71 and a83. The A71 might be where it is because there is a lot of competition in the dual driver IEM world that is doing amazing things atm. I'm blown away by how good the Havi B3 sounds at ~$60 when amped (out of a cell phone sound is at 75% potential vs IBasso DX100 on med gain). They're releasing a Havi B6 so the B3 might be cheaper soon.  A few pages back someone mentioned a deal through Lend Me Your Ears, I think 10% off?

vsonic please have dealssssss - i'm trying to pick up the gr07 classics for even more of a steal than $99. (somehow psychologically the price dropping below $99 seems like a huge hurdle cleared even if the price only drops to something like $80)

Just setup an alert with camelcamelcamel and you will get an email as soon as the price drops.

camelcamelcamel doesn't alert you for goldbox or lightening deals though.
