Apple Touch 5G thread.

People have every right to make a comparison.

Amen, this guy seem to be displease because I had to explain why I think the Dx 50 sound was better after he himself compared this two DAP

The only thing better on the DX50 and X3 compared to the iTouch 5G is the power, THE ONLY THING THAT IS BETTER...

In the other way, the iTouch 5G sound SO much better, totally flat, with 0 distortion and near zero impedance.
The DX50 and the X3 colors the sound so much, and have way more distortion. Much worse audio quality...

When I tried to explain that it's better to just listen to both of them and judge them with your ears and not graphs then he started asking this thread to be close or deleted... Mind you I own a DX50, iphone4s and ipod touch myself.

These docks must have their own DACs built in, as the 5G Lightning to 30 pin adapters do. The 5g iPhones and Touches have no native audio line out.

Am I to understand that this means I can't connect straight to the DAC of an iTouch 5th Gen via LOD to a portable amp? I was thinking about doing this in order to get a cleaner signal, straight from the DAC. Also, crossfeed functionality on the portable amp would be nice.

I also agree, I love the Cirrus Logic DAC built into the iPod Touch 5th. I tried using the lightning to 30 pin adapter to an LOD but I dislike the dark and muddy Wolfson DAC in the adapter. Now I just use a silver interconnect to my amp and the sound is fantastic.

Now I'm really confused. I thought a LOD was just a little device that you plugged into the lineout of your ipod/itouch/iphone in order to utilize an external amp and get a cleaner signal from the DAC?

Up until the advent of the lightning connector you were correct. However, since the lightning connector, in order to use a conventional LOD you have to use a lightning to 30 pin adapter to connect the LOD to the iDevice.

Okay, but then we aren't using another DAC.

Someone wrote that they didn't like using a LOD with the iTouch 5th Gen because the LOD had a Wolfson DAC and made the sound warm...

But using an adaptor, in order to use the 30-pin line out, isn't using yet another DAC. \

Now, I noticed that one guy freaked out about anyone derailing the thread even slightly...

But what sounds better? The headphone out? Or the lineout (assuming the lineout works as I have described)? I'd be willing to drop heavy cash on a portable amp with a wicked crossfeed circuit. Maybe.

Sorry to confuse you further but the lightning to 30 pin adapter HAS a Wolfson DAC built into it (hence the $30 price). So if you use the adapter to connect to an LOD you are bypassing the internal Cirrus Logic DAC for the Wolfson DAC in the adapter.

For me the best sound is to use the headphone out straight to the headphones or IEMs or an interconnect to an amp. That is the set up I currently use in my portable rig as you can note in my signature.

Now you're really going to hate me...

Why didn't they make an adapter that simply serves as an extension to the usual LOD? That way one can continue to use the Cirrus DAC (while maintaining a flat frequency response (as detailed here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/apple/ipod-touch-5g.htm )

See, I'd really like a crossfeed function, so utilizing a portable amp is an option for me. But if that means I have to use a DAC other than that which is inside the player then I defeat the purpose of buying the player in the first place.

The DAP market sucks. Seriously. Horrible competition.

First, I agree with you and Ken Rockwell's assesment of the iPod Touch 5th. I assume you want a cross feed function to avoid double amping the sound. All I can say to that is I keep the volume at 50-60% out of the iPod and let my amp carry the load. I avoid an clipping at high volumes and I detect zero distortion.

Agreed. I've used both the HP out, and lightning to 30 pin adapter (with Wolfson DAC) to feed a separate amp. The HP out is cleaner. I've also tried both configurations feeding my $3k Decware desktop amplifiers + HD800's. That is an incredibly resolving system, and I can say with certainty the observation holds true. That's not to say someone else may prefer the warmer less focused sound of the 30 pin adapter. Preferences....

May I recommend you look at the Leckerton 760? It has a crossfeeed circuit. I haven't personally used it, but have used the Leckerton uha6smk2 with the iPod touch. The amplifier sections are similar. Very clean and neutral, sounds great with the touch (HP out)

But.... If you're wanting to drop "heavy cash" on an amp, why not consider one of the apple certified DAC or DAC/amp combos? (Centrance m8, clas, hp-p1 etc) These DACs allow you to bypass the iPod DAC/amp completely, using the touch only as digital transport. The sound quality improvement far surpasses any amplifier you may tack onto the touch. Crossfeed can be applied on the touch via a player app....

Speaking of which ..Neutron Player app. Everyone with a touch should be using this. Stellar! My favorite!

Perhaps I'm using the wrong terminology, or we've had our lines crossed somehow. What I meant by wanting a crossfeed function is that I want my amp to blend, to a small degree, the left and right channels together, but while retaining stereo sound.

Thanks for the feedback anyhow though. The 5th Gen Touch does look pretty nice. I don't care for any of its gimmicks. I just want a player. But it seems that nowadays Apple is producing pretty competent (and potentially audiophile worthy?) players.
