Also the HM-700 is announced. Featuring 32GB onboard flash.
HM-700 will support TRRS balanced output.
The RE400B/600B IEMs will be TRRS balanced by default.

Two versions will be available:

I hope it has the same crappy UI and buggy firmware as the 901 or I will be really pissed off.

901 body again... Sigh..... Its quite awkward to use it in public...

Exactly what I was thinking. I guess the pcm1704 is out. Its not like there weren't Wolfsons when they made the 801. I suspect the 627 is just after the Dac and another chip(set) is the output stage.

WHY the PCM 1704 sounds WONDERFUL :/ I don't want a Wolfson Honestly though I need to get my hands on a PCM Balanced Dac Amp cmbo from Audio GD :O or get a balanced tube... so yea I'll stick with the ESS 9018

but STILL

This product is really a weird idea to me in Hifiman's range. Looks like they are filling the gap in their price range using a bunch of leftover parts.

Great idea, and I've discovered someting... out of my Hm801 ALONE the w1000x sounds better than it does out of the Line out to the Pb1 [this is thanks to the PB1's upper mid boost]

So honestly... the hm801 proves EACH day how great it is! I'm very happy with it as i's kicked my old Hm601 in the tushy!

Still :/ it's a shame they are making these wonky new devices. The Hm 701 seems resonable actually, but the 802... no thanks! I'll stick with y black n gold 801 thanks

The point was that they could have stayed with the 1704 but chose not to. I'm also a 1704 fan but do prefer it with more sophisticated outboard circuitry than the 801 or any portable can provide. Perhaps they wanted a flat high frequency response on all their new models so switched.

I personally think the ESS is a VG chip as an all in one but over rated overall. I've heard pcm1704s with the right circuitry around it sound better than any ESS. Other than it's high battery draw, ESS 9012 is probably a better choice than the 1704 for a portable due to all it's inboard circuitry but the Wolfsons are used for very good reasons as well and also have VG onboard stuff. Low current draw and very nice balance of parameters and inboard filters for the purpose.

nice techy answer!

Happy to hear the PCM sounds better with Higher end gear. Will have to try one of the AGD PCM dacs now

Is there no further news about this player? seems like a really nice entry point to hifimans highend line up for people who doesn't want to spend the extra 500 bucks or so for the hm901
