Sony NWZ-ZX1 - 35th Walkman Anniversary model

@ Anak,

That could also be a tiny hand!! :D

In a way I'm glad that Sony finally decided to put a microSD expansion slot onboard, but I wish they went with two instead of of just one slot.  I think I'll keep using my ZX1 (thanks Sean!) given that I can always use my wifi drive for additional storage.  Again, I'm blaming AK for the jump in pricing.

Which wifi drive do you use for the ZX-1? Thanks

I kind of expected Sony to go balanced with the ZX2... I don't get the GPS - and wouldn't want to be paying extra for that. They realise people have phones, right..? The addition of a microSD slot is great though.

I'm using Seagate Wireless Plus 2TB.  It takes awhile to index all the songs (well it is 2TB after all) but it works great with the ZX1.  I got it couple of days ago at bestbuy for around $170.

OK that's exactly the same one I got a few months ago. The Seagate app and the ZX-1 DLNA server app doesn't work well all the time but they work. I hope you have better luck because my Seagate has crashed twice in those months and I'm now on my third one. It's all under warranty for 3 years though.

I see.  I had the older version as well but it was only 500GB and it worked fine.  I'm trying out the 2TB of their latest model and it is working okay so far.  Will report back though.

The ZX2 looks like a nice player but looking forward to hearing about the sound quality. If this sounds like my ZX1 and PHA-3 combo then it's a no brainer as that is heavenly. If not, then that's a lot of money saved!

wish Sony had kept the exquisite aluminium design... suppose I should email Price-Japan and get my order in...

both measurements if they are right, show great sound for portable(specially crosstalk is often really poor on portable devices), you mustn't put that against manufacturer's specs, all products pretend to do 110 or 120db SNR, that's a load of crap. they do that in the digital domains, or at the amp section output only with no load, or with the ideal load etc.
but I must disagree with your explanations.
SNR is measured on those test with a certain voltage, that forces you to push the DAP really loud and a LOT louder than what you would use on IEMs. so when you'll use your IEMs, having a SNR or -70db instead of -90db, will make the hiss 20db louder and more likely to be heard under some circumstances. simply because lowering the volume is not bringing all the noises down with it. so in effect you can very much end up hearing the noise clearly with very sensitive IEMs on calm passages while listening to average loudness. because say the measurement was done outputting what would be 90db for the IEM, when you're listening calmly at say 70db, that will mean some of the noise is now 20db loud on that particular IEM and you will hear it on silent passages.
but still usually when the SNR measures better than 75db on most RMAA, it means most people will never mind any noise. only the ones with really picky stuff(togo 334, se846...) should really look for better specs or simply get an amp that has better specs. and that's what lachlan is saying I think. he's bummed out because he expected the sound to go with the price, but it's the look that goes with the price the most.

I also disagree with the higher resolution being more accurate. while it's true in the end(at least for higher sample rate), it's usually not audible as what it's improving is usually some noise well below -80db. so from 0 to -80db from 20hz to at least 16 or 18khz(depending on the roll off filter) the sound is 100% the same in 16/44. that's why people fail blind tests. I won't start a pointless war and people who feel they can hear improvement over hires should just use hires. but the improvement will be way down below the music itself that is as you said often in the first 50 or 60db of dynamic.

now while I'm saying all this, those measurements seem to show stuff well below all this and well below audible range so to me they both should sound very transparent and the same indeed on most heasy to drive headphones at least. and it's not a bad thing, it only means that we have at last reached transparency in portable audio. now we just have to concentrate on driving power and getting the right amp when it's needed.
I sure would love my cheaper DAPs to have the noise and crosstalk values of the ZX1.

Hi,

I don't disagree with your detailed explanations. If you check my intial post,I was making general statement on SNR measurement not being the overall or even significant determinant(within the reason) of SQ. On the topic of benefits of higher resolution, as you said yourself, its pointless to argue. I can hear the improvement within the very audible range (string instruments don't sound strident, less cognested, more relaxed presentation) but appreciate if other people say that they can't hear it, or use math. to prove that there's no benefit.

Regards

How many people use the ZX1 with the PHA-3? I've had this combo for a couple of weeks now and love the sound but just started listening to the ZX1 on it's own for the first time in ages and can't hear much of a difference to be honest. Maybe my ears are tired, I don't know.

Could using amps create more of a placebo affect than an actual improvement? It's like reading how good the sound is with certain equipment and getting caught up in the excitement of it all. Expecting it sound different after having that seed planted in your head.

Internal is still 128GB + 128GB microSD total 256GB. Battery life claimed to be 33 hrs for 24/192 and 60 hrs for MP3 running on Android 4.2 (why not 4.4.2 I wonder?). Still no native DSD but converted to PCM on the fly.

Bluetooth transmission supports LDAC...never heard of it (will google after this post). I guess it's proprietary(??) and a step above SBC Codec.

The reason for no 4.4 and up is because like the ZX1, the ZX2 is probably using the same old OMAP4 chipset.  This only has official support from Google for 4.3 and I don't think there are any official 4.3 or 4.4 releases on devices running OMAP4.  Any device with OMAP4 and running 4.4 and above is probably a custom rom.  Not even the Google Galaxy nexus with OMAP4 received kitkat, so do not expect the ZX2 if it is running OMAP4.  There is no 100% confirmation that the ZX2 is running on OMAP4 but if it were running anything else, I am sure it would have shipped with at least 4.4.  This might be the reason why Sony was able to get the ZX2, it is just a heavily modified ZX1, granted it did come out earlier in Japan so they have had time since the intro there to update it but I guess Sony opted to save costs again and jack up the price.

One thing that puzzles me is the naming scheme, unless this will change once it is released, doubt it, the device uses NW designation and not NWZ as with all devices outside of Japan. I am not sure why this is the case.  Maybe Sony will finally just use on designation instead of 2 from now on.

Those who are used to having one card slot want two of them. When people get used to using players with two slots, they will want a player with 4 slots.

I have players with one and two slot and much prefer the one with two. Think of it, that will make this player an excellent alternative to the ak240 for half the cost.

Which player do you have with two slots? To have two slots, I use two Sandisk Clip+ players.

To name a few, AK100 & X5.  Have you heard of those two?  They sport dual two (2) microSD slots.
