I have been fumbling around with it in the new firmware. I am trying to get low and middle mids a bit more separated, they sound a little congested at the moment (but in no way is the bass interfering with them). I am currently running the 12khz and 16khz bands at +2 (increase air between instruments, at +3 things sound too mechanical). I think I need to play with lowering the bass/mid-bass a little. I REALLY need bands between the 30hz/180hz and 1khz/4khz to make the proper adjustments, especially the latter. I am also unsure what to do with the 330hz and 600hz bands, as I never had them on Cowon players.
 
At the moment, the player sounds okay, but is lacking the imperfect euphonic sensibility my D2/B2/Zo combo had. I think taking a player with rolled off bass/small soundstage/slightly warm nature (D2), adding a miniature subwoofer/amp (Zo) and listening with ultra fast and sharp BA-based IEM's (B2) was my own personal magical formula and I am frustrating myself trying to duplicate it.
 
I have not bothered with the build-in amp since Day 1. I am either lining out to my UHA 6 Mk II, Magni or my car stereo. I was totally unimpressed with it and I believe in separating the amp/dac anyway. I am used to the Zo hissing at me all day, so I didn't notice hissing during my brief time using it.

Does anyone know how the dx50 sounds compared to the d42 mamba? Having to use a separate source on the d42 isn't a problem for me, as I just want the better sounding of the two.

Just some advice as far as iBasso amp is concerned with the DX50; I acquired a D12 and do not regret it one bit, it is a match made in heaven ( coax in and double WM8740) it sounds so good that this is the only amp in my line up that I feel pulls the DX50 to it's finest.

You can experiment if you like on the cluster size but I have always used the default cluster size and tried not to play around with it. Try with the default and see if this will fix the issue. I am pretty sure you are not going to gain anything changing this parameter, play safe and use the out of the box formatting. Another advice; the initial format on the brand new card is usually fine for our purpose. You just make you life miserable by changing the parameter. A simple quick format is all it takes to get going.

You are right - I will do that to make sure if this is the source of this issue. Still I have read about this bug from other people. Anyway I am sure that iBasso will fix that - these guys seem to care about their customers, read forums, listen to advice and fix issues.

  A question about the 3x Gain settings
Do each of these settings simply 'add' a certain db of 'volume' or are they similar to a Microphone Gain setting on a mixing desk which increases the sensitivity of the microphone so that it picks up [in effect] more frequencies?
I'm basically unsure of the exact nature and function of the gain settings
or example, instead of clicking to gain3 (the loudest) would it be exactly the same if I simply turned up the volume by the same amount or is there a definite difference in functions here?

Gain settings in any sense will do the same thing.  You are never increasing the sensitivity of a microphone, but instead boosting the signal with a larger voltage through a preamplifier as you increase gain.

Killing that 30hz band REALLY improved the overall mix. Sounded good at -1, even better at -4, so I minimized it and can't be happier with the results. Especially with the warmer sound of this newer firmware, really helped un-muddy it.
 
Taking the 4khz band down a notch really warmed the sound and improved the overall clarity. Made a huge difference. Having it up one notch made everything very mechanical and annoying.
 
Only change I might make at this point is I might take the two mid bands down a notch. They sound fine as is though.
 
Have been listening to a steady mix of pop/metal/rock/videogame music throughout the day. Lining out to a Magni, using Mad Dogs.

Don't run with scissors.

It's all with caring, you should see how many adults complain about ear ringing and loss. You just don't want to add to the statistics so you provide some advice. You are always free to ignore.

No problem. It took me over a year of messing around with my D2 to find perfect settings on it, glad to get good results out of this thing so fast (especially with a different amp/headphones). On the D2, I minimized the 80hz band (well, I changed the frequency to 105hz and then reduced it) and it had a similar effect. I'm starting to think those low bass bands just aren't so great for headphones.
 
Quite frankly, NOW it sounds like a real audiophile player to me. Can really hear the nuances of the singers now (I was getting goosebumps from the fricking Tailspin theme song, lol) and how they blend in with the mix. There is a touch of a mid-bass hump, but it isn't bleeding into the mids at all, I can't picture things getting much better from a clarity standpoint.
 
It's passing the Megadeth test ATM with flying colors, can actually understand all of Mustaine's lyrics, can clearly hear the dual guitars and sounds like ******* balls-out metal.
 
Edit: Now is passing the female vocals with acoustic guitars test, courtesy of Amy Grant. I'm sensing a bit of clipping, likely need to take down the treble bands a bit, but is a minor nuisance.
