Oh dear, i just received my dx50 today and boy am i dissapointed. I was seriously expecting it to be an upgrade over my hm601 but the hm601 stomps all over it, and what's with the eq? it does not work!! god i thought it would have been fixed in the latest firmware but no it has not. This shall be going into a drawer until they can sort the firmware out.

Is there a consensus about the best software for ripping CDs to FLAC? I'm on a Mac.

Thanks!

Can you write to it or delete any other folders? If no then may be it is something related to permission either hardware (if you use the micro sd through sd card) or software if the card is set to read only on mac.

If only those folders you cant delete, i have no idea but you better try to format it on mac or on windows..

If non solved try to explain the in more details..

Thanks!

Everything I have read has told me that ALAC (Apple Lossless) is sonically identical to FLAC.  Since the DX50 supports ALAC files, I have started encoding in iTunes using Apple Lossless and stopped worrying.  Very liberating, although I'm sure there will be comments about the comfort of my chains, etc...

So, I think I stumbled upon the perfect case for my DX50+Shadow stack today, and would also work very well for a DX50 on its own.  It is a case made by Pelican, model 1010.  It has a rubber sleeve inside that the DX50 just sits right in with no movement, and the lid has a layer of foam padding on top.  They also make a model with a  clear cover, but no foam on the underside of the lid.  Here are some pics, and best part is it was only $10!

I had heard about this dx50 for some time but resisted purchasing one until i was sure that all the little niggles were ironed out. I kept on however hearing all these positive comments regarding it's music playing capabilities. I thought to myself this dx50 must be really something i think i need to purchase one and see what all the fuss is about.
For sure any new portable hi-rez music player will have it's share of problems with early firmware, and i expected that now the firmware is up to 1.2.7 that these problems will have been addressed, but they haven't. I see that some others have also been less than pleased with the dx50 eq and i read a post somewhere in this thread i basso's reply saying that they believe the eq works as it should......Well it does not. So basically until they can get the eq to function properly it's into the drawer it goes and i will stick with the hm601.
I am not giving up on the dx50 as it has a lot going for it. For one it is a lovely piece of tech which looks and feels even better in the flesh. The touchscreen actually works unlike the one on my s;flo2 which incidentally had a very temperamental eq which would engage and disengage randomly. Back to the dx50 it has proper buttons, it has a digital volume control, 3 gain levels, line out and digital coax out! all excellent stuff.
So please i-basso either sort out the eq or let the Rockbox crew work there magic on it. Fingers crossed and rant over.

After a lot of testing and good communication with the ibasso I can tell you it works as it should. The only difference is that the EQ when it's on its reduces the volume by 6 db so when you use the line out with full volume will not clip the analog out.

The problem with the EQ is just the usual perception problem of move loudness is better.

Turn the volume a bit up and you are good.

I'm not sure in which way the EQ is not working properly?  I use the EQ pretty heavily, and it works great.  I don't have any complaints with it.  Once you know what exactly it is doing when you turn on it, it works like a champ and don't desire any changes be made to it.

+1

Could you explain a bit more specifically how the EQ is "not working properly"? Does it clip? Were you expecting more dramatic changes like Cowon's effects or Fiio's bass boost? More or different bands?

In what ways does the HM601 stomp on the DX50 ?

The HM601 is a 16 bit nos dac so has a very distinct and lovely sound and if that is the sound sig you are after I'm not sure the DX50 is for you.

Normally if a lot of EQ is needed, there is something wrong in the audio chain. I don't use it at all. I want to hear the recording and if it was done wrong, or my phones are bass heavy, light or I like bass heavy, then I change something but not normally EQ but in practice, I  keep everything pretty neutral so if the sound is off, then it is the chain and not a need for EQ. Having said that, I tried EQ and it seems to work fine as does the rest of FW 1.2.7.
