The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016

To the guy having troubles with RKbatchTool, if you dont hold the volume up button before plugging in the DX50, your computer wont read the drivers, which it sounds like is your issue. Also, I had to be the Admin for it to work (meaning I cant do it t work, but works fine at home). Also, as others have said, the RKbatchtool can save a completely bricked DX50. I think you could take a magnet to it and scrample it completely and bring it back with RKbatchtool, although I will never intentionally try this =)

Just did an upgrade to dx90 an I have to say dx90 is significantly better. The difference between 1.2.8 (dx50) and 2.0.0 (dx90) is very noticeable and is definitely worth to upgrade.

So you upgraded hey, get out of here go to the dx90 thread. :D joking of course

When you look at it closely, you're actually poorer by having both, even if you sell it you'll still loose.

There were a number of people here when the 90 came out who jumped on it as a 50 upgrade, tried the 90, found it not to their liking, and sold it.  Not having tried a 90, I have no information in regards to it being an upgrade, but I still really like my 50.  Hopefully the new firmware (should it EVER be released) will add to the 50's quality.

BTW, I took a look at the 90's thread, and people there are talking about battery life, sound quality (some don't like the newest fw), when another fw will be released, etc.

i got to try out the DX90 at a retail store when looking for IEMs to try.
i find that the DX90 isn't that much of an upgrade from DX50.
Maybe my ears has grown accustom to DX50.
but looking at what my DX50 has done for me. i dun think i will be getting DX90.

btw i'm using DOC2008's Mega Xplosion firmware.
it has been doing very well for me.

I'm in Southern California and I've never seen a retail store carrying this kind of stuff.  I have to read about things, and then listen to other people's feelings and experiences.  H2OFidelity has been very helpful in that regard, as have others.

It just seems that these upgrades and variations really are, percentage-wise, not too far apart.  If I pay double what I paid for the DX50 and get a DX90, is it going to be twice as good? How about an AK240?  Ten times as good as my DX50?  I just think a lot of times it's chasing an ephemeral "better" that leaves you constantly wanting something more.  Yet when you get more, you still want more.  Would I like a Tra 1+2?  An AK240?  Sure.  But I just can't justify the cost.  Maybe if I win the lottery.

that is how i feel as well... how i wish i could win the lottery as well... hahaha...

but as far as my own journey goes... having DX50 has been a huge upgrade... but in order to make my Rig better each upgrade will be a huge jump in price...

i'm sure ibasso will not disappoint us...

i just realise fw1.2.8 was release in january... i have been checking for updates from monday to friday since then till today...

Quantifying SQ is a very subjective and many other factors are in play. The headphones used being the biggest factor, then the individual's preference/bias.

The difference between DX50 and DX90 may not be twice as much to some but it could be more than that to others.

To be honest, I like DX90 over DX50 because of the DX90's amp. DX50 via a LO is already very good. Anything better is just like splitting hairs.

Even though I have ciems, I still prefer a full-size headphone than an in-ear for mobile. So I prefer a DAP that deliver a clean, stable and sufficient power. On paper, DX50 has the same power output as DX90 but in practice they are not. Third-party measurement reveals DX90 delivers more power than DX50.

After lugging a DX50 + amp for few months, I got tired hence, the reason I get a DX90. I am still keeping the DX50 because of Rockbox. I can fine tune the SQ further.

I think I am settled in terms of source and amps. I am now trying different phones for different experience. I just discovered my preference leans on bright SQ which lead me to Beyerdynamic and Grados.

I went from the iPhone music player to a Colorfly C3 to an amp (BH) for the C3 to a bigger amp (JDS Labs C5) for the C3 to the DX50 with the C5.  And from standard Apple iems to middling Ultimate Ears iems to better Ultimate Ears iems to, finally, Ultimate TF10s and then to Dunu1000s..  Nothing here was horribly expensive, and nothing here was a giant sound quality jump.  The C3 was a bit better than the iPhone in sound quality, it got a little nicer with each amp, and a bit better (mostly UI) with the DX50.  Same with the iems.  A bit better each time.  Nothing has ever been an "OH MY GOD" moment, just a "boy this is a bit nicer" each time.  Maybe if I spent a couple grand on iems and a couple grand on an AK240, I might get to that point, but I think it would be more along the lines of, again, "this is certainly nicer."

Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the right thread to ask, but I'll give it a try.

For last 10+ years I had three rockboxed iRiver HP-140 DAPs. One is used as transport and hooked to Benchmark DAC -> Meier Opera amp -> Ultrasone Ed 9's for armchair + glass of red type of listening. Happy with this setup.

The second one is portable rig used everywhere else, mostly out in the backyard, killing time at airport lounges etc. Used with Klipsch IEMs or (more often) Koss Sportapro with KSC75 drivers. Third one is a backup.

Couple of months ago one of the KSC drivers finally gave up. No big deal, but while looking at sourcing a new pair I've just checked out whats on the market in portable headphones. Long story short, ended up with a pair  V-Moda XS cans. Huge leap in SQ compared to Koss, but I sorta expected it. But this is for another forum.

Then I made a mistake and checked out whats new on the DAP market.

And because I'm in DX50 thread, you know which DAP is burning hole in my pocket. First of all I'm running out of 40GB space on iHP. It can be easily modified to 128GB SD card and it supports USB OTG, but the lure of a new toy is hard to resist. To have a possible capacity of up to 2TB in the future is really alluring feature.

I assume there could be few of you guys here who have/had iRiver HP1xx DAP so my question is - is amp on DX50 better SQ wise than iHP? I did a fair bit of reading on interwebs, most of the comparisons are between usual suspects (X3, X5, DX90 Cowon, Sony.....) but not much against the dinosaurs like old iRivers.

I can see potential in V-Modas, so if the DX50 has better amp then I'll just get it and be done with it.

Thank for reading.

Cheers.

I wouldn't expect the 2TB thing to becoming any time soon. The next step will be 256GB microSd cards and I expect they'll be extremely expensive for a while..
However, as new DX50 owner I am finding for the first time that I'm getting a somewhat audiophile experience (using Westone 3s with compli long tips).

Basically I'm amazed again at some music that I've been listening too for years.

Previously using a modded iPod (CF card and Rockbox) and its a big leap to my ears.

Yeh i'm really loving my new dx50. Got sick of carrying around my cellphone strapped to a portable amp, having a sleek portable player like the dx50 is awesome. It really makes my Martin Logan Mikros 70s and Earsonics SM64s sound glorious! Once its functional as a usb dac it'll be even more awesome!

last night after a couple of frustrating hours of trying to tag everything  for my sd card and having no joy i decided to format the sd card with disk utility(mac), unfortunately instead of hitting format sd card i hit the dx50 by mistake and now i can't get the player to show up on my mac...  doh any ideas?

Today, I was informed by iBasso that the new firmware will be available "within this week".
