The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016

I like the sound of 1.2.2. better too...
1.2.3 vocal and some strings sounds strange to me.
But the more defined bass is welcomed.

The WM8740 DAC chip has a built-in digital filter, so the firmware might be playing with it.
Fingers crossed...

BTW, anyone paired DX50 with Beyer T90?
I'm looking forward to get one recently :)

I haven't done any A/B testing but I'm enjoying the sound of 1.2.3 as well! Much unlike the 1.2.3 firmware for the DX100 where they dropped the ball on the DAC timings resulting in overly bloated, muddy bass. Maybe they wanted to release a "beats" edition...

I agree.. i thought there was something going on with string instruments... especially in my symphony orchestra tracks...

but to play other genres like blues or oldies... it is still pretty ok... seems like there are pros and cons to 1.2.2 and 1.2.3

now lets hope the 1.2.3 final is... good as well.

I'd hate to disappoint you but there is only two things they can do with the filter at the moment, the sharp or slow roll-off at the end of the spectrum using the filter. There is one more thing called the de-emphasis but I would think it's more related to sampling rates and the effect does not seem to be as dramatic.

If they turn it back to sharp band cut-off instead of slow then you'll be back to 1.2.2 else 1.2.3 sound.

With the DX100, there was an option to set the rolloff yourself - I wonder if they could add that tho the DX50 as well?

Sorensiim:  What kind of amp are you currently using with DX 50 ?

I'm thinking of getting Quickstep for my DX 50 ( that discount is pretty nice ).. but i wonder if there will be
any noticeable difference : with amp / without, if   "only"  Westone UM3x will
be connected.  ( listening rock / symphonic metal - alot of music with guitar  )

Also what 64gb SD card do You guys suggest?

That one ? :  64 gb SD Sandisk

Thanks for answers,
Cheers Acredis

I'm very much in love with the Quickstep:

Dead silent, powerful when needed, great soundstage and detail retrieval. Mine just came in the mail today but I have been listening to a loaner for the past week. Highly recommended if you can live with the shape

Just got my JH16PRO. Amazing detail and clarity, and oh that thundering yet clear bass. Paired with DX50, I love the instrument separation. It feels like listening to a full-size headphone the soundstage is clearly larger than my H-200. I tried all gain settings and turn up the volume, guess what?? Dead silent no hiss. I plugged it in my M8 and I can hear hiss even at the lowest gain. I'm still on FW 1.2.2, I like the synergy. Considering I only got the JH16 for less than 3 hours, I'm relunctant to try the new FW.

This is definitely good times for me

. I am now questioning the idea of getting an extra amp with DX50 + JH16Pro. LOL

If you move to 1.2.3 it's even less needed, the line out has gone up to the roof, you can even connect your iems directly on it and you'll have enough power to drive them. The line out is so clean, it's just unbelievable.

Well in terms of frequency response, the pass band filtering due to the slow slope roll-off has caused the highs to be smoothed out, slowly that is but not as a clear band cut-off, this has the effect of injecting harmonics which most likely cancel some of the bright highs we use to get prior to 1.2.3. The bass got extended no doubt because we are also more sensitive to them, we feel them even more with the updated firmware. The dap has gone more musical and less neutral. I guess not everyone will be happy about that.

What about the output impedance of Line Out? Isn't it higher than the amp output?

I love how DX50 to be neutral. I will try the new FW in the near future but let me enjoy my JH16Pro with 1.2.2 for some time so when I move to the latest FW I will have a better impression of the difference.
