I hate to say this, but for me, this update has been the worst experience I've had with my DX50 since I bought it. After maybe the 8th time of formatting and putting the update.img onto my DX50, it actually decided to work.

Since yesterday evening, I have waged an ongoing war to get the DX50 to work properly. Thanks to some ingenious design choices, the scanning at startup has been removed and there is no way to force it without using a USB cable. If I remember correctly, removing and reinserting the microSD card would bring up a scanning screen. However, as of this update, it no longer does this, meaning that if you are away from a USB cable the player has to be restarted before it will accept that you have put a microSD card in.

I set the auto-shutdown to 'Never' and left it on all night. After 12 hours it had scanned from '2 Chainz' to 'AWOLNATION'. That is truly pathetic. In 3 minutes of manual scanning through the directory, I got to at least the B's. The DX50 is more broken than it has ever been, and the only saving grace is that directory mode now doesn't take you back to the top of the list when you go back a level.

Seems you have the same problem as me. Did you do a factory reset after updating? I suspect it's a defective SanDisk 64GB microSD which fails when scanning.
I left mine scanning all night too and this morning, it was still at the "media scanning" screen, so i forced it to reboot (the x for closing scan and long press power button and shutdown didn't work either), and after checking there were only around 10 albums scanned. scanning works perfectly fine with only the internal memory though.. will test further with an older 2GB mircoSD card I have at home.

Updated mine to 1.2.2 at work yesterday afternoon.  When I got home I decided to just throw my AKG702 into it instead of unpacking all my transportable gear.  I haven't really listened to the 702s for over a year since I got my Grado cans.  I always felt like the 702s were anemic, lacked bass, and had a veil over the mids and highs.  Now I would say that the DX50 makes the 702s more fun than they have been in a long time.  I can just plug them in, switch to high gain, and listen to music for a while.

(I'm not saying the 702s have changed.  Just saying that I'm enjoying the presentation without over analyzing it.)

Listened to 3 Widespread Panic albums.  Lots of detail and solid bass showed up for the party.

That sounds a lot like the problems I had when I used copyinorder to write all the files on the sd-card. It's probably not the OS that's causing this, since the scanning is just fine here. It scanned 30GB of files in just a couple of minutes here.

Mine does the scan just fine when I pop the microSD card out and back in, but I did have a similar slow-as-molasses half-assed scanning occur on 1.2.0. Did you do a factory reset after updating to 1.2.2?

damn, i must've forgotten how this DAP sound. Changed the Heaven VI tips, updated the firmware, set to high gain, WOW. Soundstage is much impressive and layering is better. I mean, I totally forgot what the previous sound was like.
It doesn't matter which is the factor I guess. I think I'd only manipulate each factor under control when i really feel like it.

Oh ya, and I like that little icon which isn't there previously. Lovely <3

......Musicheaven, is there such a big difference between the ipod classic and the 5th gen video, both rockboxed??

That is an entirely different question. To my humble opinion, I find the 5th gen Wolfson equipped player sounding better as far as bass is concerned but once you tap the dap directly and use better caps then it's a different animal, the mids and highs improve. At that point one can easily have difficulty declaring a winner. I experimented with different caps and not all the improvements were the same. It takes the correct combo to bring it up to a decent level. I hope I did not confuse you with my explanation. Basically what I am saying is because of the modding aspect of the 5th gen you can do better than the stock classic.

Ah! My DX50 has been delivered and is sitting at the office. I will collect it tomorrow afternoon. As soon as I charge it and update the firmware, i am going straight to plugging in the Heaven VI.

Interesting that you use high gain...

High gain has less hiss...

talking about hiss - after the update, the hiss is MUCH less on all gain levels. I don't know how the **** they manage to do it with firmware update, but still...

And did I mention improved sound?

I ended up creating a thread about my inability to just pick an amp for use with the DX50 and go with it:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/687288/so-im-looking-for-that-perfect-amp

Any and all input you guys might have will be much appreciated. I deliberately created a dedicated thread to avoid derailing this one

question number ONE: do you really need an amp for DX50?

question number TWO: depennds on the answer to Q1
tongue.gif

frankly speaking i remember how many people hoped DX50 would be perfect and would not require amping.
