  I have been using my fi.Q (all Black Gate caps, original Japanese tantalum resistors and other refinements)with the DX50. The DX50 as a source is outstanding. I had not listened to it with my fi.Q and the fi.Q is, IMO, the best portable there is, though I have not heard them all. It is also better than any home amp I have heard (this goes up to 2000 dollars). Anyway, the combination is dynamite.

I'm currently looking for a DAP to replace my current portable rig - iPhone 4 + Fiio E17. 

I've now got my mind set on the DX50, but had a few questions

1. Might be a stupid question, but will I see a noticable difference with my current setup? (I plan to use Future Sonics MX5 earphones)

2. Would it be recommended to carry on using the E17 with DX50 or could I just get away with using the DX50 on it's own?

3. Can the DX50 drive my HE400 headphones?

Hi, regarding your questions,

1. Yes, I believe that you will be able to hear a difference. The DX50 would be a considerable step up from your current set up. E.g. Better separation, imaging and detail IMO.

2. The DX50's own internal amp would suffice. I believe it's on par, if not better, than the E17's. By pairing it with the E17, you might be sacrificing a huge part of portability for a minimal improvement in sound quality.

3. I don't own the HE-400's so I can't answer this. Sorry.

there must be a couple of different dx50's. I find it better than the ak100 especially in the highs.

Not only do different brands of micro sd cards change the SQ, but also the different sizes of storage.

Also don't forget to stand on one leg with a rabbits foot in the opposite hand as the DX50 wearing socks that you haven't washed since the DX50 arrived. That is pivotal to getting the most out of you DAP.

I'm so glad to report that whether it is me getting used with the sound, or the burning in is working its way (over 20 hours). The sound is smoothen up real well. Everything it so well defined and detailed. Am only referring to the line out though. No more harsh bass and mid when I 1st got it. Not a big fan of the headphone out because the line out is so much more better with a proper external amp! Truly in love with this player now!

Could someone please explain me what does the Gain(LO, MI, HI) function on iBasso DX50 mean and how does it work? At the moment my DX50 Gain is set to LO with my SoundMagic E10, but next week I'll get VSonic GR07 Bass Edition Earphones. On what Gain you would recommend me to listen music with E10 and GR07?

The Gain settings will depend on what headphones you use. highly-sensitive IEM can be driven enough at LO gain. If you use hard to drive cans you may need to set it to HI gain.
 
Just be careful, setting it to HI gain with sensitive headphones will be very loud and could blast your ears.

A higher gain setting would mean a greater volume with your headphones/earphones. This is useful if your headphones/earphones are not very sensitive and cannot reach sufficient volumes on Lo. Unless your phones are struggling to reach listenable volumes on Lo gain, I'd recommend leaving it on Lo. On the E10 and GR07, Lo gain should suffice since they are sensitive enough.

Just my 2 cents.

I would define "sensitive" as having a sensitivity of >100dB per mW. As long as your earphones can reach listenable volumes on your gain setting it should be okay.

In addition to what Hikari50 said, you always start at LO gain for IEMs then slowly turn the volume knob to max. If you still don't get enough volume, turn the volume knob down and switch it to MI (same goes to HI if need be) until you get to the volume level you like.

I found that sitting on an engraved narwhal horn of the ancient First Nations people (point up) produces similar results.

Maybe you just don't have golden---ahem---unobtanium---ears.

For me, most of the time is set to Hi..
Heir 5.0 sounds better with mid..although i stress them using Hi to see how they perform under load..

Anyway, when is the new firmware gonna come out? i wish to use this dap more often...
