Hi everyone

First thing first, I am not an audiophile. I am a full time mechanical engineer and part time rock musician who really have no idea about high fidelity audio. However, I have the mental need to research about any term or concept that I read about, and considering all of you guys have spent ages playing and working with audio gear, going through the forums just creates a ocean of confusion for me.

The reason why I stated that is because I am after a new headphones (over-ear, close back) and I don't even know what is the best starting point. I have been using the Denon AH-D310R which my girlfriend gave me 2 years ago, and I felt they did their job just right for being a firs-pair of headphones. Now they started to make funny noises (one channel seems is failing so the voice and low frequencies are muted).

My budget can be stretched up to AU$250 if the headphones are "decent". I would like to narrow my options to maybe 4 or 5 candidates that will provide a good experience listening to rock/metal as dominant genre, with important presence of progressive, multi-instruments bands. I also enjoy jazz, soul and even classical music, so obviously I am not looking for headphones too specialised. I would prefer gear with detachable cable because I tend to ruin the plug joint of my headphones, but first searches suggested me those kind of devises tend to be quite expensive and therefore, a fixed cable is accepted too.

On of the options that I am sure would work for me is the Audio-Technica ATH-M50.
I had a look at the Sony MDR-1R, and even though I did not try them on, they look nice and have a detachable cable.

Well, unfortunately those are the only ones considered so far and would appreciate if some of you guys give me advise.
I think ebay or amazon are the retailers to go for, as the prices of technology in Australian stores tend to be too high when compared to online alternatives.

Thanks folks!

The ATH-M50s are a great can. I can't comment on the MDR-1R.

What style of sound do you enjoy with your music - balanced or bassy or sparkly?

Hmmm... only other thing that comes to mind are the Shure SRH840s. Really nice smooth sound with great mids.

The Ultrasones are also a good option for their bass response. I've been told that a lot of drummers go for them, but I can't say for sure. I have the HFI-680s because they're more balanced than the HFI-580s and 780s, but harder to drive and need an amp for good dynamics.

If you have a chance take a listen to the Shures, M50s, and Ultrasones to see if any suit. Hopefully some other Head-Fiers will have some good suggestions too.

I would highly recommend the sennheiser hd-25's for a solid closed phone for rock/metal, it's also a great can for monitoring. However it just butchers the piano, I wouldn't recommend it for classical. The audio-technica ESW9 has been going for stupid low prices on the for sale forum here, is a great can for all genres. It just has a nice smooth sound, pleasant all around, not bloated. Personally I am not a fan of closed phones, hard to get the midrange right. The Audio technica does it right all around, and I highly recommend it. The HD-25's won't do all genres right, is not comfortable as the ESW9, but is superlightweight, has a split headband (you couldn't get it off your head if you tried), and is indestructible, and again great for monitoring. The only other closed phones I owned were the Denon D2000, I enjoyed owning them however in the long run I sold them because they had a thin midrange.
