Re-evaluating personal opinions with gear downgrades / side-grades / upgrades (whichever part of the chain that may be) is the least contentious part of the discussion!

Oh I was just poking fun at the M500 hype train.

Despite my home demo opinion, saw the Momentum second hand for an absolute steal and given the condition. Am meant to be saving up for other stuff though

I know that feels.

Ditto.

Also, if you like the warm signature of these headphones and are looking into trying full size headphones, I sincerely recommend MrSpeakers Mad Dogs! Pricing is similar as well and these are one of the MOST comfortable headphones I have ever tried! The only downside, you need an amp to fully/properly enjoy them. But seeing that this thread is basically for transportable/portable cans, I guess that's not what you are looking for. From MH's list, the Sony MDR-1R are the most comfortable to my ears, but I only enjoy them when volume is down... once I turned up the volume, the upper mids became fatiguing to me... But, another option you could try.

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. The Mad Dogs are too bulky for what I'm looking at right now. I want them to be portable (enough) to take with me from time to time. And I don't know if I'll go for the Sony, I certainly don't like the build quality of them, too much plastic for what I'd be paying :) But maybe I'll give them a try. So far the Momentum has proven to be comfortable and the SQ is of course gorgeous in its own right. If I go for the Momentum, I just have to decide whether to go for the black or brown color (I think the brown looks a bit classier, but the black has a 'cool' factor to it). Currently have the black color, but I could easily exchange it.

Had the brown one... it looked OUTSTANDING!!!!
(also had the brown MDR-1R and the HD598s... guess I like brown! LOL!)

I ordered the on-ear Momentums (blue) last week, so hopefully those will feel more comfortable to me than the originals and sound will not take a hit... We'll see...

I'm a Beats headphones fan, but the Executive are garbage.  There's nothing going for it besides the look.  It doesn't even have the Beats house sound.  Disappointing product to say the least.

Well I've made up my mind, am keeping the Momentum. Am getting a brown one instead though, think it looks nicer than the black one.

Thanks guys!

It was the constant hiss from the NC circuitry that really got on my nerves.

Nevermind... just found a great deal on the brown Momentum for € 225, vs. normal retail price of € 299 :) Just ordered those (after I returned the M500 and black Momentum).

Great thread you all have going on here!! This site is SICK!! Its really been a huge help for me in trying to make a tough decision. I'm coming from the Beats Studio (Yes, i know these aren't the best, as they are def overpriced, but i bought them years ago and they've done me well tlil now, but are starting to fall apart and i'm noticing how crappy some of the parts are).

But after reviewing all the comments, I'm between the KEF M500, Momentums, and the Sony MDR-1R. My biggest concerns for this purchase are leakage pretty much. Also, when talking about the KEFs, are they horrible on lets say, airplanes, because they are on-ear and not over-ear? I'm used to the Studios being over-ear so thats why i ask. Also, if there is another choice that i should look at, please share.

Sorry for the "NEWB" type post...

Thanks so much

Welcome to Head-Fi!

Best advice I can give is to pore through the threads, gather info, ask questions and order something from a vendor where you can return it.

Between the 3 you've isolated down to (MDR-1R, Momentums and M500s) I would rank them Momentums > MDR-1R > M500 in terms of isolation and leakage. SQ though I would rank them M500 > Momentum > MDR-1R. Too bad we can't have it all.

Ultrasone? While I haven't heard the DJs, I have never heard an Ultrasone worth the price of admission. I owned the Ed.8LEs and while nice, I'd easily take at least half of the headphones I've covered here (and they all cost much, much less....like $300-400 vs. $2000
size]
 ).

Don't want to keep a closed mind, I am willing to give them a try...just not plunk down my hard earned money on a pair to find out. The Signature Pros though do measure reasonable well. I'm personally more interested in them.
