As far as noisy background goes, I'm pretty sure it won't match the TOTL DACs if it packs only one R-core.

The "dark" sound is not from the chip, it is from the overall design. Regardless, the point of having the PCM1704 is moot if the rest of the design is compromised to cut down the cost IMO.
