The Fiio X5 Thread

Has anyone tried one of the siren series with the x5? Angie in particular?

I'm in the market for some IEMs and will demo the Angie, as well as the Shure 846, and Noble 6, and Westone w60 with my X5 next week when Headphone Bar gets the next shipment of Angie's (they sold the demo!). I may hate all of them for comfort given I have very small ear canals but I have to try them regardless or I'll go nuts wondering what I'm missing. I've tried the 846 and they didn't fit so well but I only tried one pair of tips so there's hope.

I'll report here and the respective threads my impressions, though brief as they may be.

I really enjoy the SE846 + X5 combo! Really clear sound, well separated instruments.
I also have an RWAK100 II and still prefer to pair the SE846 with X5.

you should consider ie800. they are extremely small, and can fit any ear canals. they sound amazing straight out of x5, this is one of the ways i tested them, and i was very pleased.

I hear that it's a great pairing! I'm going to test all the mentioned IEMs because one never knows what one may prefer and I'm the type of guy that would hate to miss out on that 5% difference if looking in the same price range. I'm very glad to have my X5 to compare them.

Nah, looking for over the ear cable design and without ports for noise isolation.

Looking forward to hearing your impressions. Headphone bar is pretty good to buy from out of province. Never been to their store, but ordered from them a few times. This last time I got a bus re400, which they refunded for me so I could get my westone w40s. Interested in the Roxanne and Angie with the x5,as I am a long time headphone guy that has absolutely fallen in love with my w40s and iems in general.

Love headphone Bar, and Travis is great to deal with. I'm more of a headphone guy as well and seriously enjoy listening to the LCD-XC (with the X5/e12 and Oppo HA-1). I want to have a similar experience while I air travel or when I can't bring my full sized headphones. The Layla would be in my hands now but I've put a limit on the budget so they're out, but from what I've read they are in the top of many users lists, whether its full sized headphones or uIEMs/CIEMs. That's impressive. Although I've splurged on the XC I have a hard time going there with IEMs.

Same with the X5. It's in the Goldilocks zone of price/performance for me. I'll do my best to articulate what I hear when I go next week, likely toward the end of the week.

Also interested in your findings. I demoed 846s and ie800s with X5 and after much consideration bought 846s. Two months later the ie800s! Very pleased with synergy from both with X5. I also was told i have very small canals and the 846 are as big as I can take. That's with small green Westone Star tips which I feel give liveliest sound. Be interested if you find Angie larger and a more difficult fit.

Feature Request: What would be nice is if we could have more custom EQ setting like one for a speaker system and another for headphones and have the ability to rename them

With the latest official firmware (2.4) you can change all of the EQ settings. Thats 9 custom EQ settings.

There is also a firmware unpacking tool which you can use to open up the FW, rename the EQ settings and reload the custom FW on the X5. Works great and is super easy to use (Windows only though). Just double click the eq.ini file and change the names. If you want you can PM and I can walk you through it.

Changed theme with custom EQ and custom name.

If it's too much trouble you can just keep the same name and remember the setting associated with the EQ. For example, customize 'Rock' and that would be your setting for your speaker system.

I just made a rather extensive comparison: the Shure SE846 once driven by the X5, once driven by the Corda Symphony (with the X5 as signal provider). The result, in short: The SE846 sounds far better when plugged in the X5. That's a surprise to me. My interest was peeked, so I made the same comparison with the HD 800. I expected the result to be closer, probably in favor of the Symphony. But again the HD 800 sounded far better directly from the X5 to me: better imaging, more air, even better bass control. And astonishingly both line out and headphone out sounded the same through the Symphony – the X5's volume set to 120 at low gain.

This comparison stayed on my mind. The more so as a rather modest portable amp (E12A) seemed to offer better sound than my Corda Symphony. So I gave it another try. Same configuration: X5 headphone out driving Shure SE846 (white filter) vs. line out feeding Symphony. This time I was particularly brave: I allowed myself to adjust the X5's EQ for adapting the resulting sound to the respective configuration. In fact during the fist comparison it was set to fit the X5's headphone out, which isn't necessarily the best setting for the combination with the Symphony.

EQ setting for X5's headphone out:    –1.8     –1.6     –1.2     –0.8    –0.2     ––       ––      –0.2     –0.8     +1.8
EQ setting for Corda Symphony:        –1.8     –1.6     –1.2     –0.8    –0.2     ––       ––      ––        –0.4     +1.8

Now I liked the configuration with the Symphony as amp much better. It offered a smoother, rounder, more refined sound with higher resolution – «round» in a good way, not in the form of sacrificing detail. I liked it so much that I asked myself if the Chord Hugo could still make it any better. But this for I switched to the Sennheiser HD 800:

EQ setting for X5's headphone out:    +0.4     –0.4     –0.2     ––       ––       ––       ––      –0.6     –1.6     +0.8
EQ setting for Corda Symphony:        +0.4     –0.4     –0.2     ––       ––       ––       ––      –0.4     –0.8     +1.4

The sonic improvement provided by the Symphony was even clearer with the HD 800. The X5's headphone out sounded comparably treble-friendly and slightly harsh. Above EQ curve cured this to some degree, at the expense of a tiny bit of detail, but by itself, without direct comparison, it sounded very good and quite smooth as well.
Now, with the Hugo as source the sound was actually rather similar to the signal from the X5's line out – just more detailed and with better imaging. The direct connection to the Hugo's headphone out again provided a comparable increase of detail and imaging. I must confess that the Hugo + Symphony combo offered a seductive, rich sound, a little «bigger» than from the Hugo alone, but it also gave the impression of a bigger brush, whereas the Hugo's headphone out sounded finer and more accurate.
