Is the x5 still a good buy today? Given that there's an x7 coming soon and the second gen x5 out by december? Thanks in advance

Really depends on what upgrades (if any) the X5 II will get, and when will it actually be released, and when it's released, will there be a price increase?
And when will the X7 be released? Price of X7? Advantages of X7 over X5?

the X5 2g should be released after 3- 4 months.

Any small details you can give us about what is likely to be changing James?

Love my X5, but how good of a deal depends on your needs, expectations, and patience

This.

Also consider that the X5 II may not be an improvement for everyone. If the features and sound quality are on your radar now then buy one now and enjoy it. It's a great player!

Why wait as there's always something new on the horizon, and it's not like it's coming out in a week.

Also curious about preliminary hardware specs or any design cues. Still using a scroll wheel?

Anyone who's into tech should know that this is the answer.  If you need a DAP today, you buy what suits your needs TODAY.  If you wait 3-4 months for the next X5, there will be something else coming out in just 3-4 months.  It's a never-ending cycle.

I bought the X5 because it fit my needs today.  If I could have waited a month, I' have gotten the X3 II, since it also fits my needs but it's $100 cheaper.  I may even still sell my X5 to buy the X3 II when it comes out.  But for TODAY, the X5 is a great sounding player that meets my needs for a reasonable price.

Well if you are into tech you will always ask around first as the new iteration could be popping up sooner than expected. And of course do your research if you are into it. Like the new info on the X5, it's good to know when the new one is arriving so you could gauge if it's worth to wait or not, hence my question. Thanks guys for your replies, i'm into buying gadgets but of course i dont just drop by the store and buy what i see there right away, i dont have unlimited money supply hehe so it's good to know what's upcoming too to make a knowledgeable decision. A little off topic but take the case of the Samsung Galaxy S6, if i didnt ask around or read up and just buy what suits my needs TODAY, then an S5 will be good enough, and miss out on the S6, which will come out next month. Sorry for the OT, just explaining why i had to ask around first before buying a dap

Cell phones could be the worst possible example to use, since there's ALWAYS a newer better one coming out next month.  lol

But yeah, no worries.  Doing your research is good.  I've had my X5 for about a week and I'm really impressed with the sound.  The scroll wheel and center button are disappointingly janky on such an otherwise high-quality device, but that's my only real complaint.  Day to day, I use it as a USB DAC/Amp at work and it blows away the Audioengine D3 I was using before.  I have no problem recommending it on based on SQ; but if you're expecting a top quality build, you may end up slightly disappointed like I did.

Yeah, that damn scroll wheel. Disappointing isn't it. The rest of the build quality is very good however but ultimately that dodgy wheel let's it all down. I went back to my X3.

Gone are those days of monthly releases, flagships from LG, Samsung, HTC and Apple only comes once a year, save for Sony which has a six-month cycle with their Xperia lines. Going back on topic, would like to ask does the X5 have some sort of a "search songs" feature? similar to search on the ipod classic?  plan to add two 128gb microsds when i get mine and wondering if it's possible. tried searching the thread but cant seem to find it... thanks in advance.

No search feature, but you could organise your tracks in such a way that it's easy to find via folder browser.

That's a shame. I have the X1 and the wheel on that feels very accurate, it clicks and moves the selection bar with each click. It seems a shame that a player with higher quality sound isn't built to the same spec. I was quite interested in the X5 but I'm not sure now.

it should be exactly the same wheel.

i had a chance to see x1. x5 is better in every single way, like an upgrade.
