For 1/5th the price many will consider the K712 Pro to the HD800 especially looking at the frequency response and other charts.  They are remarkably similar.

My review link on the K712 has been posted twice and linked by another users quote once in the past few pages of this very thread.  If you Google search AKG K712 review, my review that appeared on Headfonics.com will be in the top few spots.  I've also reviewed the HD800 in multiple magazines and media outlets.

"I believe that the K712 doesn't even begin to touch the HD800 sonic quality, therefore, I think it would be silly to tell anyone the K712 compares to the HD800". This is the clarified core of my statement, not that nobody should listen to both and see how different they are.  Again, I apologize for the confusion and usage of the word.  You misunderstood the context even though I tried to imply the core of the statement in the very next sentence about the sonic qualities between the K712, the HD700 and HD800.  I should have phrased the sentence in a different, more clear manner.  I apologize.

They both look good! [if only the orange color of AKG can be changed to errr purple? ]

Very first impressions:

K712 Pro are quite balanced and versatile but definitely cannot touch HD800... Comparing both is for sure possible and K712 Pro perform well in certain areas but no way I would call the K712 Pro superior. HD800 are on a different level.

K712 Pro's treble response is still problematic and hard to listen loud (as with Q701)... Actually significantly harder than with HD800 which offer more linear treble response (yes, more linear). HD800 are also significantly more neutral.

In terms of SQ, I am pretty sure the HD800 is better in general because of its higher price point! It also belongs to a high - end family. Would be interesting if you can do a price vs performance comparison between the two thought xD

I will for sure do a much more complex comparison, will post more in few hours... I won't take price into account when doing the comparison of specific characteristics but I am definitely going to sum up my view from the economical side of things as well, especially since I've heard cans like DT880, Q701, HD600, HD650, AD1000, Shure 1840 etc. when searching for the best phone for my friend (for up to 500USD). I haven't heard HE-400 though as I am not really interested in their coloured FR.

I am surprised you call HD800 linear, as their midbass umph simply kills that.

Check the graphs on innerfidelity or headroom, they are very linear... Almost no bumps or dips from bass to treble except the 6.4khz area and possibly 9khz as well. They are not perfectly neutral but are very linear in comparison to other headphones. And whats more important - they actually SOUND very neutral, check the Battle of the flagships article. David seems to agree with me about this.

K712 Pro's treble is not as linear as HD800's treble... K712 Pro do have more pronounced 9-10khz peak as well as very apparent trademark 2khz peak. I've tried to EQ out that 6khz peak of Sennheisers and its definitely not as apparent as 2khz peak of AKGs (in terms of overall impact on music).

Damn why do they have that 6kHz peak...I wonder if flattening it would impact the openness/soundstage and that's why Senn hasn't touched it.

Emertxe,

Have you compared the K712 and the HD800 on to tube equipement? I'm sorry I'm on my phone currently, and can't easily get to read your review.

By the way, for heaven's sakes stop buying electronics in Europe! I live in Europe, and except for heavy things like juicers or vacuum cleaners, I get all of my electronics from the USA. In all including shipping I usually pay about half price, often even less.

Whenever I travel there I bring an empty suitcase, and all my friends hand me cash for laptops, headphones, memory cards and various other devices. The US also has an incredible used market of really good stuff, because we have a habit of selling things we just bought a month later for the newest model. :-)

It is amazing that the K712 Pro can be compared to the HD800.  It says a lot about the K712 Pro and also the HD800.  Both are fun, dynamic, comfortable, and engaging headphones.

im so confused by this, nobody here has said the k712 can be compared to an hd800 in fact multiple users have stated completely opposite and that the hd800 is on another level.  did i miss a post or something where someone said the 712 is as good anywhere as the hd800?  super confused right now
