I admit I forgot the replaceable amps which are great...the UI, let s wait and see. The 901 will not allow the Dac function unless you get the dock and the battery life is still shorter, from what I am told. Design is just a matter of taste. Both great players indeed, I feel one is a better all rounder if you want portability while the other has better SQ and can scale more with the amp cards.

I find the replaceable battery of the HM-901  a huge selling point to me. How many electronic devices in the long haul - whether it be phones, ipods etc. where the usual reason/gripe for parting with it is the battery? Quite often in my case. That's huge to me.

Why are they charging so much more for the HM-901 than ACGears and Moon Audio?

Makes me feel lucky i got mine for $900 during that Head-Fi special sale ACGears had. Still waiting for it though...

I am confused. Other than the ACGears special offer, its all the same. The Head-Direct offers include extra amp (my guess is, you missed that part).

Ahh ok it has the IEM amp included, that makes sense.

The way I see them after owning both for a while is that both are very good player with different design philosophies and (minor) compromises.

Which dap one prefer boils down to his/her priorities. I see merits in both design decisions and got both and enjoy both. Neither one is head and shoulder above the other even pitting area of strength against weakness as whatever weaknesses they possesses aren't major or remotely close to being deal-breaking for me, which really is the expectation at such exorbitant price point.

Can't go really wrong with either. Personally I still think AK120 is the overall more all-rounded pocketable player, while 901 /w either the balanced or the cheapo diyer discrete amp board gave me the absolute best sound at the expense of the sleek profile/finishing and single charge battery life of the ak120.
Any thoughts on the best amp to pair to ak120 to match the 901 sq?

Probably a better question for Gavin as he also owns both players plus every highend amps and interconnect we can imagine.....!

I want a second opinion :)

I only tried a few: arrow 4G, pico slim, and 71B all with some DIY occ copper interconnect and would say I like 71B most. But since it isn't an a/b type comparison I really can't say how the combo compared to the 901 setup.

@kkcc - Are you able to play 24bit ALAC on the 901?
