Is your cable balanced? It won't sound right if you run normal cable in balanced mode.

That is very true. Though for some reason, to my ear, switching it to balanced with an unbalance cable inserted also sound better.

I have made up a very nice TRRS to Hirose with some nice very high end cable and I can now use all of my phones balanced with the 901.

I believe you will get inverted phase issue if using single ended cable. Depends on the type of music you may actually like it. For classical, definitely you will notice it is wrong immediately but for other studio mixed electronic stuff you may still like it.

I understand but to my ear, the sound is cleaner and more spacious.

Then maybe sth is off. But also keep in mind the key improvement I experienced is from the amp board upgrade rather than the SE to Balanced change.

I would even say the SE to balanced changes is subtle enough that the materials used for the cable might make as much or even more of a difference. It is hard ti ascertain unless youvto a/b the same cable in normal and trrs termination.

For reference, I had yet to decide to balance my tralucent gold/silver cable.

Yes i am using the exact same cable for both se and balanced mode as I have dhc ultrashort trrs to trs adapter

If you have the TRRS and have the switch set to balanced, to my ears, the sound should be an improvement not the other way around.

That's why I think there might be something wrong with my 901 or the balanced amp :/ Oh well, i'll be using the 901 with a tu-05 anyways

Yup agree...

Z, this is probably the first time ever I see the balanced mode sounded worse. Maybe give it a couple days and see if things improve for you. Hope it works out for you else get a replacement as the board could be defective.

Is there any chance that the conectors on the iems are inverted? Are you sure that the adaptor is completely inserted / properly conected? It seems obvious but it's better double check before returning the card or the player.

Exactly. Check the adapter. There might be a little short or something that would cause degraded sound quality.
