You would prefer 801 if you're into the pcm1704 type sound in the DAC9 .  For me I opted for NFB-28 also with ess9018 over the reference 10.32 as I prefer the better resolution, more air, and deeper bass extension.  But I still might be very tempted for a ref 10.33.....

Would be great if Fang would do a replaceable DAC section in his next flagship (while reduce the size, extending battery, eliminate bugs, and make it cheaper while he is at it....)...
We can dream right? RIGHT?!

It's not really a one-to-one DAC9 vs 901- different interconnects, and my DAC9 comes with the USB interface separately to reduce jitter. But yes, I can hear more of the DAC9 in the 801 than the 901 :)

I'm not really sure you can do replaceable DACs because the implementation is probably key.

Hi jelt2359,

Thanks very much for this 801 vs. 901 comparison of Line Outs.  It's nice to read an opinion that includes the "spirit" of the gear, as well as the technicals.

Going on what you've written, I think I'm going to enjoy the 801 that should be here in five days, more so than I would the 901.

Mike

It's a very good DAP, but it's a GREAT DAC. I think you will enjoy it very much.

Yup mine isn't a fair comparison of nfb28 vs 901 either. The audio-gd is ever so slightly resolving more micro details than 901 despite have just 1 9018 chip. But then the nfb28 is 5kg with a big R core transformer and your dac9 is even bigger as a full size 15kg rig with 8 dac chips. It is simply amazing we can even compare the dap's dac performance against their desktop counterparts.

How does the vintage setting alter the sound? does it affect the line out or only the HO?
In the Vintage setting the highs are rolled off, I remember to read that 3 db. It doesn't affect the whole sound. Imagine that you're listening a vinyl and you lower the highs to reduce the needle noise just a little. Nothing extreme. I don't know if affects the line out cos I haven't used it.

I'm curious myself if the vintage/HD settings are digital filters, or analog tweaking.

Me too. I would expect it's in the hardware since it is a physical button, not in the firmware / software.

Damn this UI is anoying...you can play music but had better not try to panic it...

Told you, it is a steep learning curve.... but then the music would numb you into ignoring many flaws I couldn't imagine me letting slip.

Exactly....and the SQ is a no brainer for me. I found what I was looking for in a DAP: the technicality and power of the DX100 and a bit more musicality. I am selling the ak120 and keeping the Tera different flavor and long battery.

Wow that is a quick verdict!! Not even the UI and form factor advantages of the ak120 make it a more worthwhile fight?

I still want to see how dx50 turns out for me before I decide to sell my ak120.

I just need the SQ. And I have the Tera for size. Ak120 is a much better all rounder but I usually just listen to full albums and not so much on the go.

Can someone point me to a balanced cable to TRRS that would work for the LCD-3? Or do I have to get that custom made? (I know several vendors who will do it, I have a favorite one).

You can get a 1 ft. Female 4-pin XLR to bare conductor cable here, and then solder on the TRRS plug provided here if you wish for under $20. You can also try contacting RedCo and see if they have a TRRS plug. I couldn't find one on the custom cable maker.
