... well, to my ears at least.

Please don't ask me for a comparative review or something alike. On one side, my English is not good enough to allow me to jonglate at ease with the audiophile vocabulary

, and, on the other side, a search on "W2002" would immediately reveal how comparative reviews lead to flame wars on exactly the same topic two years ago.

I had the opportunity to listen to an R10 with various kinds of music: opera, rock, reggae. I am listening right now with the W2002 to exactly the same stuff and I am more impressed. Well, I liked, of course, what I heard with the R10; I just like *more* what I hear with the W2002.

So, to the question "is the R10 the best dynamic headphone?" I would reply that it certainly is among the best dynamic headphones, but that the W2002 is precisely in the same category - and a serious challenge for the R10 if a definitive "winner" should be determined.

Glad you like your W2002's. I found them very amp-dependent, and with the right one they are wonderful.

I'm waiting for someone to compare the W2002's to the new L3000 "Leatherhead".

I like my ATH-L3000 better than my ATH-W2002... but I don't think I am capable of putting out a decent comparison since I really haven't been into critical headphone listening that long (just got my first real headphone amp a few weeks back.). and I think I have a cold or something so that won't help either.

With the wrong amp, the W2002's can seem to be in a "slumber". A good solid-state amp (my personal fav is a carlo-modded Sugden Headmaster) will wake them up nicely.

My guess is that the PreHead is another such amp (I've never heard the PreHead).

Glad to see you like your 2002s!

But I disagree with your opinions, either!

R10 is one of the best dynamic headphones Iv ever heard!
the speed ,the soundstage, the detail, the natural of the sound of R10s are amazing!
AS we know, the elecrostatic phones are always have better speed than what dynamics do, but it is not includeing R10s.

No headphone can beat R10s.
not even HE90, SR007~

anyway, 2002s is also a very good headphone~

enjoy~

Hi greenhorn,
Did you get to listen to the R10s in your system, or on someone else's? Just curious. Enjoy the W2002, they're a fine pair of headphones.

I think the W2002 has too many idiosyncracies to be a REALLY great phone, because opinions of it will always be divided. It can however be a stunning phone give the right back end. Cool (too cool with many other phones) and clean is how the W2002 likes things behind it.

It does reward experimentation and mulling over.

Something that came up at the latest meet and also with some others I've let listen to is that they nearly always listen to the W2002 too loud. Something to consider.

Thanks everybody for the "enjoy!"!

I have listened to the R10 with someone else's system - the amp was a Grado RA1, I can't remember the CD player.

I would definitely like to listen to both headphones together, on the same system... since it is said that both are quite amp-dependent.

I've owned both. I like both , but the r10 is a better headphone. The r10 is even more amp dependent and the ra-1 is not even close to good enough for the r10 ( not to say the ra-1 is a bad amp, I've owned it, it's OK).
One thing I do like over the r10 on the w2002 is the bass. Other wize I kind of think the w2002 is a kinda like a baby r10. Similar signature , but the r10 is like a step better in every way. Sound stage , mid range , detail , speed.

Ath-w2002 is a great headphone though, good to see you found the headphone for your self... I haven't

I would think that the R10 would be severely limited by the RA-1. I would tend to think it was not a fair comparison. In fact, I would say it wasn't even a valid comparison. I am not however saying the R10 is better or worse than the W2002. I do find your post a touch misleading however.

Yes, I think with any headphone there are compromises, imperfections. I definitely don't feel the W2002 is in the same class as the R10, but I liked them at least as much as Sony CD3000, a headphone I think is closer to its performance level. Quote:

I think it would be better to hear the phones with as few diffrent variables as possible, in this case we have unfamiliar amplification, unfamiliar source and cabling, listening in an unfamiliar location/environment too, harder to make an apples-to-apples comparison.

Not that I'm holding greenhorn's feet to the fire by any means, but I asked the question about which system he heard the R10s on just for clarification so we can interpret his comments more in context.

The W2002 isn't just highly amp-dependent, it's highly system-dependent. Fairly difficult to dial in, but man does it sound good when you do.
