The Fiio X3 Thread.

My X3 units keeps freezing. Once a day, for no apparent reason, the buttons stop responding.... while the song keeps playing.

Only solution: use a toothpick and press reset. This is ridiculous. I have to keep a toothpick on me at all times!!!!

I bought my unit one month ago. It runs the latest firmware.

HELP!!!

You could also press the power button for about 10 seconds to reset it, this should work even when the system freezes.
As for a permanent solution, let's hope that the new firmware will offer that.

which is not the same as pressing reset, right?

I believe so, it should be different.  The reset button is basically the reboot button on computer and the System Restore is probably the restore to backup or factory restore on your laptop.  Hope that helps your case.

I have posted this a few times - there is a complete rewrite of firmware in the next release, so it is not just an mere update and therefore it will take a bit of time. The plan is to adopt the new firmware core from X5 (which has proven to be more stable and better audio performance no less) and also a revamp the whole X3's UI at the same time. So the current plan for FiiO is to fix as much bugs on the X5's firmware and as fast as they can, release a stable firmware, then migrate the new firmware to X3. Since the old X3 firmware is destined to be replaced, I don't think they are spending much time to fix its bugs just to release some minor intermediate bugfix that will take their time away from getting a stable X5 firmware first. Instead, they are gunning for the big fix. FiiO has chosen to do it this way as, in the long run, it means both X3 and X5 user will receive the same bugfix and firmware improvement in relatively shorter time frame in the future instead of having the same software team working on two different firmwares at the same time which will take longer time for everyone. I know there is no comfort in saying this, but until we see the next release on X5 firmware, we probably won't have the next X3 firmware. The good news is, the X5 firmware seems to be almost ready.

So we should expect an audio improvement with the next firmware update? Any indication what kind of improvement?

I was wondering, if I use the line out of the X3 by connecting it to an external amplifier and listen to my music from the headphone out of the external amplifier, would the X3 last a few more hours since I'm not using its internal amplifier (I turn the volume on the X3 down all the way to ZERO)? Or would it still have the same amount of play time, no less no more?

I don't have the exact detail but the audio engine is being reworked. As some of you might have read in this thread (awhile back) that the mp3 decoding isn't quite perfect, and that's one of the bug that is going to get fixed on the new firmware.

Yes, it will. When line-out is used, the headphone amp is automatically disable, thus using less battery. You don't need to adjust the volume to get the benefit.

I have my hands on an alpha firmware for the X3. Alas it really is an alpha feature-wise: no EQ, no high gain setting, some other menu items missing, system settings that are in Chinese no matter what language you select (and the language selection is also missing from the menu so the only way to select language is the language selection screen that comes up on the first boot-up after flashing). But it is using the new UI, and seems to be using the new mp3 decoding engine. And gapless really is gapless (tested with Pink Floyd's DSOTM, FLAC) Who knows, it might even play DSD  If anyone wants to try it, they can pm me for a download link. Please, no redistributing the alpha and only report bugs to me via pm.

Edit: just received an updated beta of the firmware with EQ (both software 5-band and hardware 2-band), complete menu in English (although I note that the tag for "idle power off" and "sleep" have been mixed up), language selection in menu... all in all I'd rate this as a solid "beta" worth trying out and I anticipate to be inundated by pm requests so here's a public link :D :

Extract x3.fw into root folder of mSD card in X3 (that's formatted in FAT32), turn off X3, make sure X3 is adequately charged, hold down upper left menu button while pressing power key to start the update.

If things don't work out for you with the alpha here's the version 2.1 firmware to revert to

I'm opening a new version of firmware for this in the bugzilla
https://app.devzing.com/FiiO/bugzilla/

although I anticipate this version to remain current for only a week or two at most :D

I am currently running the 2.1 firmware, and the only problem I am having is when I try to use the x3 as a dac . Regardless of the bit rate of the files  24/96 or 24/192 it always shows 24/44 on the x3 in dac mode.

When you are playing music with Foobar use Wasapi output or else windows will just feed it the default shared mode bit and sample rates.

I'd say the guy giving me the alpha this morning was just a bit out of the loop

Plays DSF files now!

Sort of lags the player a bit but plays them none the less.

Outputting the DSD playback from the Coaxial Output Results in a PCM signal with 88.2khz (My receiver doesn't show bit depth)
