without an eq the update to me is worthless, dam how many times do we have to say we need an eq.

I will not settle until I hear words for an eq

If you need eq you should consider buying a dap with eq

You're going to have a restless life ahead of you it seems.

maybe you should make a new thread titled "the X3 is a terrible DAP and is doomed because it has no 10 band equaliser even though this was never promised to be there in the first place and now i can't sleep"

Yes Gapless playback works very well for me too! I LOVE this feature!

I have some usage questions:

1. I have music in various folders which also have sub folders. So Album1 folder may have a CD1, CD2, and CD3 folder inside of it. Is there a way that when I start playing CD1, when it finishes with CD1 it just goes right to CD2?

Some kind of continuous logical playback would be GREAT! I listen to the player in my car while driving, so so have to manually switch between CDs is not just annoying, it is dangerous.

And it would be nice to go from album to album too... So If in my folder I have the sub-folders: Album1, Album2, and Album3, when Album1 finishes, it goes to Album 2 - instead of starting Album1 again.

Because when I select: PLAY ALL - it has all the tracks in alphabetical order - so I get all my track 1's, then track 2's

2. I like the setting that remembers the last track and position I am at because while driving I make a lot of stops, and I like to just start back up where I left off. However, every 3rd or 4th time I start the device it just goes to the main menu and now I have to load my music back up again.

If there were a menu option for LAST KNOWN POSITION or something like that, it would be great!

3. Random glitches - Sometimes when I skip to the next track it will show the wrong name, and I get no progress on the time counter. I have to go back to another song, and then forward again for this to correct itself. (Listening to FLAC files, I haven't tested this with MP3)

Number 3 doesn't bother me so much, but numbers 1 and 2 are pretty important for my daily use!

New forum member here. Really nice to see Fiio's participation in the forum.

Just got the Fiio X3 through Amazon - decent price with a 32GB card and coax connection kit. First thing I did was use the 32GB card to update the firmware. Then took a 64GB card I had already copied music to, put it in and updated the library. I'm listening with my Bowers & Wilkins P5s and I've got to say, the sound is pretty sweet. All of my music on the X3 is flac.

Like everyone else, I certainly look forward to new firmware, though I am hoping that playlist support makes it in. I like making playlists - it makes it easy, especially when at work, just to choose a playlist and go from there. I know that there is a Favorites folder but it seems kind of a PITA to have to copy files into it and remove them and redo every time you want a different 'playlist'.

I'm a long time lurker, and relatively new to posting here but I thought I'd join the conversation.

My X3 is a great device that I've had since the first batch was released. Every time I switch back to my iDevices I am amazed at how thin or congested they sound in comparison. The X3 opens up the music so well that I can not go back - can't "unhear" the quality.

However, it's not all a bed of roses. I'm a pretty straight forward kind of music listener who chooses an album that fits the mood and plays it through whether it's classical, rock, jazz, etc. When using the categories feature this can be troublesome while using gapless playback. The player freezes about 50% of the time using the category sorting and gapless. Using Folder browsing this issue seems to be all but eliminated. I would venture to guess this is the reason why some people have no problems and others are plagued with random lock ups of the device. Perhaps the X3 does not have the memory or buffer required to sort by category and play gapless.

I look forward to seeing what Fiio can do to help fix this problem in the next firmware release, but I'm afraid that for me it comes with an interface design that I find very unappealing. If the X3 had a cursor based hardware instead of the current button layout I could understand the design of the new interface, but for the current hardware it seems like it wouldn't be a good fit. I would love to have the option of choosing between the current and new interface on the next update.

As for the EQ it would be nice but I find I can make the X3 sound good paired with both the M-100 and K550 (opposite signatures) with the current bass/treble adjustments.

I have an X5 coming next week and I'll more than likely park my X3 in my office or hook it up to my car, but that doesn't mean that I'll completely ignore it in favour of my X5.

Gapless is supported, as long as the music files are properly encoded with gapless tag.

How does one to about properly tagging FLAC files for Gapless playback, ClieOS? I've got lots of albums which would benefit from Gapless but get random freezing with Gapless enabled on my X3, but it's very stable without Gapless on.

I usually use XLD + Media Rage on my Mac, encoding in FLAC at default compression and transcoding to 320 Kbps AAC if it's an album I care less about.

I also have access to EAC + mp3Tag on my work laptop, although I greatly prefer ripping / tagging on my Mac.

Thanks for any help with this!

I don't actually know any software that will tag (or re-tag) the files' gap after they are ripped. Even transcoding software that keep the gapless tag is rare, AFAIK. But I think the stability issue might be due to database bug in X3, though I can't be 100% sure.

I'm trying to connect my X3 coaxial output to the SPDIF input on my Yulong D100.  Should I get a coaxial cable like this and connect it to the X3 coaxial out through the 3.5mm to RCA cable that comes with the X3?

Yes.
