The Fiio X3 Thread.

Had the X3 for two weeks now. It's been finals time so I haven't had time to do any critical listening, just enjoying the music. Probably log about 2-3 hours a day on average.

I received it with v1.3 firmware? Can't remember 100%. Did the initial charge, formatted a fresh Sandisk 32gb card in the X3 and loaded up the newest firmware at the time which was v2.1 or something thereabouts. Run MP3 and FLAC for all tracks.

Flawless performance so far. Not a single freeze or glitch related to the player. I have gapless on without any issues. I use Memory play, tried both track and position. Currently it's set to position and resumes without a hitch.

The only issue was two mp3 tracks downloaded from soundcloud that had awful tags. A little editing fixed that and everything is working very fantastically.

Hi guys, firstly forgive me for being a idiot not knowing how to properly update the fiio x3 software lol…. I am currently on 1.31… I don't seem to be able to figure out how to update it to 2.1. I am using the macbook. Do I have to update to 2.0.5 first before upgrading to 2.1? I put the 2.1 .fw file inside the sd card and inserted it into the x3 and updated library and followed the steps which was shutdown, press home and ok button but I just return back to the library. Anyone can offer me some kind advice?

The most commonly overlooked item when upgrading the firmware is to first extract the firmware file from the zip file you downloaded from FiiO. The second most common is making sure the firmware file has the proper name. You don't need to upgrade to 2.05 first - you can go straight to 2.1:

1. Download the latest firmware from fiio.com.cn - http://fiio.com.cn/UploadFiles/main/Images/download/X3_FW2.1_EN.zip
2. Extract the files from the zip you downloaded to a folder on your hard drive
3. Copy the file 'x3.fw' to the root of the microSD memory card - make sure the name of the file is EXACTLY x3.fw
4. Turn off the X3, then start the fw update by pressing Menu and Power simultaneously

That should do it. On the Mac, remember to delete the extracted files or always extract to a new location - if you extract to the same location, the firmware file will always get renamed with a number following it, i.e. x3-1.fw. If this happens, just rename the file back to x3.fw before copying it to your microSD card and starting the upgrade.

You can update to FW2.1 straight away.

To update ...in shutdown ...press power on/ok and back button together ..you will see the bar updating ...that's it.

Like P. Chafe posted, make sure the memory play is set to the proper position. Also if you charge the player or add music to the memory, either internal or external, the memory Playback function is disabled until the next time you use the player and shut it off. This has at least been my experience.

Is your "Memory Play" setting on Position or Track.

Position is the one you want. It is supposed to start up where you left off.

Set to Memory Play: Position. I've had it work once, for a podcast but I can't get it to repeat that for my audiobooks.  Other than that niggling issue, I'm happy with this little powerful player.

I have my "memory play" setting on "track" and I find quite often when I use sleep it doesn't actually remember which track it was on, and just boots the the main menu. It might be a bug, maybe others can report in with their experience.
However like the other mentioned you would want to use "position" (which you mentioned you do)
Cheers

Hmmm.. sounds like there is an issue with the software then if it isn't properly remembering tracks/positions.

** Found the issue, I think.  My audiobook runs ~50m per chunk since it isn't broken up by chapter.  This length could be why it can't remember the position, it's too long.  My podcasts are in the 20-30m range so they're doable.  Looks like I should stick to smaller chunks of files since they store easier.

Okay… I followed the steps but nothing happened the update bar didn't appear I tried holding down the back and ok buttons, pressing them together whatsoever but the update bar don't seem to be appearing. I put the x3.fw file inside my sdcard but it's not working.

Could I ask you how good are the ER-4S directly through the X3? I want to get an ER-4S for my X3 as well. But if it doesn't sound good straight out of it then I'd probably get another IEM maybe the GR07 and the like

IMO, the X3 has a warm signature to it. Hence warm IEMs pairing such as the W4R makes it even warmer. Can lead to bloated mid bass hindering clarity.
Brighter sounding phones should pair nicely with the X3.
Sound pushing out from the X3 is really attractive and nice! If future updates does introduce a 5 or 10 band EQ to adjust sub bass region ~20 to 80Hz will instantaneously make this player a winner.

What about the GR07s then? And what are the differences between the GR07, GR07 MKII and the BE edition? Can anyone delightfully give me information regarding the synergy between these IEMs and the X3? I am hoping to get a clear balanced sound out of the X3, so I would want something that is neutral somewhat. Thanks.
