The Fiio X3 Thread.

Thanks for the reply :)

Being a bit of a noob myself wrt portabIe music, I will try the E07k, just out of curiosity.  I am considering the E12, since the X3 amp section is somewhat better then the E07K as it is.  I will ignore any general loudness difference.  What I am interested in is gaining more authority in the lower frequencies, without having the music loud, and without using EQ adjustments.

In your case, I suspect that the increase in loudness you are experiencing, is due to the large difference in Line Out voltages between the X3 and Apple devices.  Apple device are known to have Line Out voltages considerably lower than the 'standard', which is about 2 volts.  This has been discussed elsewhere on head-fi, by people connecting X3 to car audio devices etc.  It would seem that, since the emergence of Apple DAP.s etc. may manufacturers of car audio products have implemented an 'Apple compliant' Line In, rather that stick to the proper standards.  This will explain differences in loudness between devices connected to your E11 Line In.

The velcro strip is a good idea :)

Cheers.

Get back to us about the difference.  The numbers stated on FiiO's website has the E11 as much weaker than the HO of the X3 and yet it seems to get much louder than the X3.  I would say, based on what I hear, that the E11 does add some more impact to the bass over what the X3 does (I often run the X3 at +3 on the bass; would seem like the E11 has the same 'hump' with it set to 0 on the EQ switch).

In regards to the velcro idea; I enjoy finding ways to repurpose items.  I say it's because I'm frugal...the wife says it's because I'm a cheap person.

Hello,

Could you try deleting the media database file on the X3 as per
http://www.fiio.com.cn/support/detail.aspx?ID=100000037065714
and run a media lib update again?

I tried this and am having no luck pulling up the "Tools" in the dialogue box.

Is it possible an operating system file got deleted? I wouldn't put it past me to do something like that. Is there a way to fix it? Can I reload all the factory software, not just the FW?

Well, it looks like I'm returning my X3.  As much as I love it, I can't get it to work on my laptop at all.  Tried everything from registry changes, chipset drivers, OS re-install and still no luck.  Just going to get an E18 and maybe the X1 when it comes out and call it a day.

...does it not work as mass storage or as DAC?

Yeah, I've been having a lengthy series of exchanges with FiiO customer service over the past week about the OGG issue, and I can confirm that the fix is low priority.  I would not expect it to happen before the release of the X5, and it's unclear how long after that it will happen.

I'm going to have to seek out a different PMP, given that 80% of the music that I want to listen to on it is in OGG.  Stinks because the FiiO sounds much better than my Sansa players (Clip+ and Fuze), but oh well.  The iBasso doesn't appeal to me because it has its own problems.  Maybe I'll have to go with a Cowon, though the reviews don't seem to indicate that Cowon sounds much better than Sansa (I don't like to fiddle with EQ).

This was the statement by James before he went to have his operation
www.head-fi.org/t/651769/the-fiio-x3-thread/6600#post_10003273
It stated that fixing Ogg Vorbis decoding was on high priority.

I just talked with the chief engineer and he stated that the firmware update containing fixes to Ogg Vorbis decoding is targeted for January release. Apart from this there's good news and bad news:
Bad news: if we miss the firmware release on January, the Chinese new year holidays will mean that the update will be pushed back to March.
Good news: we now aim to release updates to mp3 and other lossy formats' decoding in conjunction with the Ogg Vorbis fix. :L3000:

The toolbar containing the "Tools" should show up on newer Windows systems if you hit the "Alt" key on your keyboard, I think.

I love the clairity and everything on the X3, but adding a parametric EQ is essential to me. The sound is often really Harsh when combined with my momentums. Will it be added some time in the future or what have been said about this? I beg you Fiio this is SO important to me aswell as many other listeners

A 10 band graphic EQ has been added to the X5 and probably will be transplanted to the X3 in a future FW. We know about the apparent clamour for parametric EQ here but even as an advanced parametric EQ user myself, I had to agree with FiiO that having a parametric EQ only would confuse more people than it would draw. Personally I hope we'll add a parametric EQ as well as the graphic EQ at a later date (I've personally demoed the power of parametric EQ to another FiiO staff myself on my first visit to headquarters early this month.)

What's probably happening is that the E11 is taking the high level line output of the X3 and further amplifying it. The voltage gain of the X3+E11 combo may indeed be higher than the X3's headphone output alone. Voltage gain dictates how loud the system will be heard, regardless of how loud the system can drive headphones in a distortion-free way. On the other hand, have you actually had to peg the volume on either the X3 or the X3+E11, or are you making your statement on relative loudness based on relative volume knob travel between the X3 and E11 (er, well the X3 doesn't have a volume knob, but you know what I mean)

Ok. I figured it out with everyone's help and got the database file deleted and updated the library. But the problem is still there. Any advice?

Still no songs displayed when I click on an album.

What firmware version are you using? Try updating to the latest FW2.1?

That's indeed good news, thanks! And even if they miss the January deadline, March is still way better than never.
