You do think about every little detail, don't you? I love this FiiO's new DAP family products, X3 and X5.

Also, slightly out of topic, when we will have official specs and all about X5?

the detail specification of X3 already available on our chinese website. about X5, nothing can share right now,

So, it is hard to ask other CEO can do the same thing in here.

That first sentence, in quotes, says much, much more than it first appears. But I will refrain from going all philosophical on the good folks of Head-fi

Anyway, I wish you good success with X3 / X5, James.

In terms of battery life. I think anything over 9 or 10 is fine. I don't listen to anywhere close to that before coming home to charge. I'm hoping for a portable E17. If Fiio can provide the same kind of build and sound quality I would be very pleased. I owned the original E7/E9 combo, my first amp and dac, and Fiio has come a long way with the E17. Build quality is off the charts now. Looking forward to the X3, but even more to the X5.

Very sorry, lots of head-fi'er known that X3 is designed before E17, the build quality of X3 is not as good as E17, but the SQ is better than E17.

although we have the ability to make a more better X3 in build quality, but the time is not enough , also the cost will increase too. hope you can understand. but for X5 , it will represent our best ID in 2013.

2) How good it is?
Still a bit too early to say for sure, but on rough comparison, it is better than Nano 7G, Clip+ and Fuze. I'll put it at around the same level as HiSound Nova 3. One thing that is noticeably better on X3 is the power amp section, which is very tight and well controlled.

3) How good exactly is the amp section?
I plugged my new JDS Labs C5 to the line-out and compare it to the headphone-out, then realize I didn't really get much improvement from the C5. Even O2 is not that much of an improvement either. You really can go amp-less with X3 and be perfectly happy. Output impedance is about 0.4ohm btw.
...

Was just about set to get the C5 or similar to pair with a Sansa Clip Zip... doesn't seem to make sense now though based on the above.  I think I can wait until July for X3.  Why is there always something better just around the corner??? Hazard of reading head-fi forums I guess.

That's okay James. I appreciate your candor and honestly. Running a business can be very complex and the X3 is a like a dream project that almost didn't happen. I'm a sound first type of guy, so if the X3 has great sound quality I will still buy and be happy. No  doubt I will also be getting the X5.

I can't wait for this now based on Clie's review 8) The pictures are great...my only real question would be around the Ui. It looks similar to what I use on my rockboxed clip zip. I basically stopped using my c3 because the ui was so annoying. How would you rate just the ui?

Excellent question...

I don't really know how to rate UI alone - but there is nothing quirky about X3's UI. Mostly it functions smoothly and like an old generation iPod, except with buttons instead of the more convenient scroll wheel. If an iPod / Cowon / iriver UI is generally a 5/5, while a stock Sansa Fuze or Clip+ is a 3/5, I'll probably call X3 a 3.5/5, or even a 4/5.

This, and no bugs. It is sounding more and more like Fiio knocked it out of the park (that's a good thing for those of you unfamiliar with baseball). For me, I think it's going to come down to whether the sound quality is noticeably better than a Cowon J3. It does sound like it'll have more power, so that's promising.

Believe me the J3 will sound "Lifeless" compared to the X3......

As for bugs - I won't call it bug-free just yet. Sometime it can has random 'stuck' (*not freeze as it becomes totally unresponsive - just stuck, like a web page is loading for too long, but you still can see the browser is trying hard to get there). However, it is generally few and far between, and is totally random (*as in unreproducible even if you do the same thing or play the same music). I get stuck maybe 3 times so far, and generally a quick restart / reset will fix the issue. If I were to guess, I think it is likely a memory leak issue due to the fact that the firmware is yet to be polished, as it often happens when I keep changing setting or switching from menu to menu.

ClieOS, can you please do a video review as well?
People including myself would love to see the X3 build quality and the UI.
Thanks,Musicday

How is the SQ in Fiio X3 comparing to iPod Classic or Sansa Fuze?
