Does a dac/amp really improve these? Something like an fiio e7. I've been putting off getting one since my es700s and grados are easy to drive.

Short answer: yes, yes it does!

The ES700 is a direct upgrade to S500s.

What geko said! Don't get me wrong, I love the s500's, and I'd say when it comes to bang for buck, they pwn the ES700's. But when it all comes down to it, I'd say the ES700 is in fact a direct upgrade in every aspect!

Compared the es-700 to the momentum, esw9a and hd558 today at best buy using my own source. I actually liked the es-700 best sound wise.

Funny, when I compared the es-700 back to back with the momentum, the momentum sounded dull and not as forward in the upper mids. The bass was similar on each but the momentum was more creamy sounding. Probably because of the slightly emphasized lower mids. The momentum still has a better build, bigger sound stage, and more realistic timbre.

The esw9a was very close. The mids are more neutral on the esw9a. I liked their sound as well. Bass was nearly the same. Overall the esw9a I felt were more neutral when compared the es700 and I really liked them too. Really got to get those lamb skin ear pads for my es-700.

Trying the hd558s again makes me kind of regret selling them.

Me require more ESW9, Momentum and Kef M500 comparisons

How is the build quality on the earpiece mechanism? *recalls painful memory of the sibling breaking the ESW9*

I'll answer for him: how the **** do you like the S400s better than the ES700s?!

They sound very similar, but JVC has a tighter bass and livelier vocals.
Considering I have paid for ATH-ES700 with WS55 pads 4 times what I paid for HA-S400 with K81DJ pads, they are a disappointment for me.
Don't get me wrong, they sound very good, but when you get used to an idea that HA-S400 represents a 50$ value,
it's impossible to justify paying more then that for ATH-ES700.

JVC HA-S400 is 26$ with free shipping on Amazon now, ATH-ES700 is 150-155$ including shipping. Why pay 6 times more ?
