its the rarified atmosphere and clean air down here - sound waves travel with less resistance hence a lighter sound signature

I certainly relate to this. I go in stages. I went for about six weeks using no EQ and thinking that it was just fine - as in why would I want to EQ? Then recently I have discovered the bass control in Rockbox which uses the EQ circuit but with carefully developed profiles for bass enhancement or reduction. I am now of the mind that decreasing bass by either 1.5 dB or 3 dB depending on the music, with a bass cutoff of 3 (Rockbox has four bass cutoff options, 1 through 4), really can take the IE800 to the next level.
 
And I still use no bass reduction for some 70s rock with crappy underproduced bass.
 
When used this way, the IE800 bass is actually very flexible. I would much rather EQ bass down than up. One can then leave the other frequencies untouched without risk of distortion.
 
Anyway that is where I am this week. Bass EQ is back in style.
 
I have had the IE800 for several months now. The cable issue still pisses me off. (Just offering a longer second section as a purchase option would resolve it but I see no evidence that they will.) However, I otherwise continue to be amazed and delighted by these IEMs.

I briefly tested the IE800 with my Logitech airline adapter, which I believe is simply a 75 Ohm (?) resistance adapter. Seems to balance/level out the overall sound signature quite nicely. Granted, the IE800 will also require significantly more volume, but the end result may be worth it for some. Anyone else attempted this yet, or care to and report back?

The price itself is probably fine for the market and how it is shaping out to be. 
 
What is in-excusable is the terrible design of the cable hampering usability for listening on the commute. This is why I will never recommend this headphone to anyone.

^ While I very much share the complaints about the cable, this conclusion is OTT in my view. When wearing a coat with an upper pocket, usability (over the ears, behind the head and clipped to my collar) is very good. Otherwise an extension cable is often required. An annoying flaw but not fatal.
 
The frustrating part is that if they had just added two inches above the cinch, the entire usage experience would change so much for the better.

IMO the cable by itself is not too bad. What's bad is actually the fact that Sennheiser has designed these to be worn cable-down instead of up like with the others in the IE line up. Combined that with the monstrously heavy Y-split and the end result is screaming microphonics into my ears. Granted, the cable shirt clip included by Custom Cable in wonderful in cases like this, but it does not completely solve the problem. I now share James' sentiment when he said that he'd like the IE800's design to be the same that of its predecessor

Yes that extra two inches (or ideally even more) would make it possible for these to be worn up and in front.

Oh sorry if you thought that I was moaning. Definitely not - most of my head time with the IE800 is indoor thought, and the IE80 handles it when I'm out and about, so microphonics are not too much a pain in the neck. And thanks for the shirt clip - that was really well thought of.

oh - - no interest to me then - still have bad memories of doing simple stuff like copying/moving files through itunes - put me off for life
