Heres a good one. I don't think we've ever done this before. What famous people come from your town?

I know it will be dead easy for those that live in NY, Chicago, London etc but anyway. Here goes.

In my town of Hull in East Yorkshire, UK. we have the following people:

William Wilberforce. A prominent figure in the abolition of slavery

Amy Johnson. The first female aviator to fly solo from England to Australia.
John Prescott. We have dubious honour of having the Deputy Prime Minister come from Hull. He lives about two miles from me.
Maureen Lipman. Famous british actress.
Norman Collier. Well known comedian
Andrew Marvell. Writer.
Philip Larkin. Poet

MUSICIANS from Hull:

Mick Ronson. David Bowie's guitarist.
also the rest of the Spiders From Mars. Previously the RATS.
Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim
Paul Heaton of the Beautiful South
Housemartins
Rolan Gift (of Fine Young Canibals) studied at Hull University
Everything But The Girl also come from Hull.
Joe Longthorne

The only person I could find was Nancy Reagan (wife of former pres. Ronald Reagan) from Bethesda, Maryland. There are plenty of people from Maryland in general, but not much else.

Denver, CO

Fiction 8 (music group)
Condoleeza Rice (politician, not 100% sure she's from Denver, but iirc she is)

Not sure about anyone else. There are probably lots more from Denver, and there are lots from Colorado (e.g. Gail Norton (interior secretary, used to be in Colorado state government), John Denver (he was from Colorado Springs, not Denver)).

Hmmm. Helen Keller was from the town I grew up in. But she couldn't really find her way around town...

Now I am in Santa Barbara -- the land of movie star retirement...or seclusion. John Cleese, Steve Martin, Ivan Reitman, Christopher Lloyd, Kathy Ireland (did not age well), Rob Lowe...I am sure there are hosts of others...I live downtown, and most are up in the hills or in Montecito, so I don't really see them. I do see Peter Noone all the time at my grocery store. He obviously lorded over Herman's Hermits, not being one himself -- he is quite tall. I have seen some **** star types too, but I have not recognized anyone... In any case, none of them support the local music society either, so I have not met them there....

Born in Vancouver and surrounding suburbs:

Steve Nash (basketball player)
Hayden Chistensen
Carrie-Anne Moss
Raymond Burr
Nicholas Lea (actor - The X-Files, etc.)
Paul Kariya (hockey player)
Yvonne De Carlo (famous actress from the 40s-present)
Michael J. Fox (well, he moved here as a young kid)
Greg Moore deceased racing driver)
Eric McCormack (plays Will on "Will And Grace")
James Doohan (Star Trek)
Jason Priestly
Nickelback
Elaine Tanner (champion swimmer in the '60s)
Gil Bellows (actor - Shawshank Redemption, Ally McBeal, etc.)
Bif Naked (singer)
Michael Ontkean (actor - Slapshot, twin Peaks, etc.)
Nancy Greene (champion skier)
Rae Dawn Chong (actress - daughter of Tommy Chong!)
Dorothy Stratten (deceased Playboy centerfold)
Debbie Brill (first woman to highjump 6'0")

There are probably dozens of others (mostly hockey players?

).

Lots of famous British Columbians from outside the Vancouver area, e.g.
Pamela Anderson, Nelly Furtado, Diana Krall, David Foster, Steve Yzerman, Meg & Jennifer Tilly, Alexis Smith, Patrick Morrow (first to complete the 'Seven Summits' - mountaineering's "grand slam"), etc.

Anyway, it was a novelty at first, but I think we're getting a little blasé about famous people because you see them all over the trendy parts of Vancouver these days.

D.
