Is the adjunction of a speakers amp will transform  the soundstage of the he 400 more in a 3 dimensional way with a less recessed mids ( v-shape signature towards a U shaped one) if so i am very curious to try it  ? :smile_phones:

The pioneer does this more so than the Harmon kardon so I would steer you towards a vintage amp or receiver from the 70's as they tend to be warm and midforward IME. The Harmon amp is from the early 80's and has a brighter sound to it, but when using speaker taps on it, I find it scales very well.

Does the sorbothane mod really work ?

its working for my hifiman he 400 ...... 12 patches of self adhesive sorbothane around each  exterior cup (  duro 30 1/8 inches) that make my he 400 lees mids recessed with betterment across all frequencies... But if you had other headphone its important that you experiment and inform yourself,

all is important : the form of the patches, the thickness, the duro, etc  read the forum :

this mod is simple to experiment with, and reversible.... But you cannot apply anything for glueing the patches, nor use any thickness, any duro, on any headphones.... For maximum and beautiful results you must search and inform yourself.... But for hifiman he 400 in the precedent post i describe what are good for my hifiman he 400....Owners of he 400 may try my recipe.... 12 patches distributed around each exterior cups  self stick sorbothane duro 30 and 1/8 thickness.... you lose 25 dollars if you dont like it.... you thanks God

if you dont recognize your he 400 for the better like me... My he 400 are so good for me that i  listen less to my speakers and Stax...

for example i try the grill mod its not a great transformation at all , only more airy and better openness of the sound but your headphones are open  and less protected.... i cancel out this mod.... for this reason.... the sorbothane mod has more impact all across the frequencies and correct the mids recession of the he 400 at least for my ears.... If you dont like this mod stick out the patches and this mod is over without traces....

Its tempting to try such a mod but I would rather line the inside of the cups. As always, mods backed with data are much, much more tantalizing. Obviously earpad mods had positive impacts...

the data are some ears, mine and ears of the thread originator EdStrelow.....this mod is simple, reversible, not costly, simple to made, and for me very convincing.... i only want to communicate the infos.... the thread detailed the essence and reason for this mod.... best regards to you

p.s. i dont want to put sorb  inside for the time being.... and i dont care the look...the grill mod was too  dangerous mod for me...earpads mod are more complicated and i dont think they transform he 400 in another headphone...this mod make that for me

Is it me or the velour pads make the vocals weirder than the leather

They're airier, less full sounding. Honestly I take issue with both

I always found the pleather pads to have an echoey effect

The grill mod is not very dangerous and is reversible, just don't go poking around inside of the housing while the grills are removed, also while the grills are off you might want to try the placing the sorbothane on the inside of the housing.  I'm probably going to try the sorbothane mod in a month or two after I've moved, it sound interesting and is reversible so can't hurt to try.
