No, it's a pure head-fier meet here UK 2012 Head-Fi Meet - September 15th Cambridgeshire.

Which BTW is being superbly organised by smial1966 (Andy), with lots of sponsors and prizes. The LL and the SR009 are being supplied by a sponser/dealer, who I think is the same one who is also attending the mainstream Whittlebury event.

The BHSE and O2 Mk1 is being supplied by me. Or at least it will be as long as Justin can supply the BHSE it in time. I should have received it by now, but Justin had to repace a dodgy volume control found in his burn in testing. By now, the BHSE should almost be "in the post".

Build quality and aesthetics are different things!

Hi Ian,

Probably not looks but yes how somethings put together does make or break it's build quality, looks are appealing to me though. About what's on the inside,  I don't know what's inside the K-01 but it looks a feels like quality, plus it doesn't sound that bad. When I first saw the BHSE my fist thought was how beautiful it looked  [ I still and will always think that ] but I didn't rush and place an order for it straight away, I did quite a lot of reading and didn't read one bad thing about it. A lot of what I read was about Justin's attention to detail and would not let anything go unless it was perfect. But after reading one particular post I immediately placed an order. That post was done by Birgir [ Post 51, BHSE Thread ] but the first time I ordered the BHSE I had to cancel it because of financial reasons, but I got my deposit back from Justin within no time.  As soon as I had the money I placed an order again, now I marvel at everything about the BHSE.

                                                             Dave.

P.S. Hope to see you soon Ian and look forward to that audio meeting.

Dude, when is yours arriving? Hope my BHSE makes it in time so we can compare the amps, if you don't mind bringing the LL over. biggrin.gif

Although I used to have the senn HD600 + HD650's and also the SR-007mk1's, I've never heard any of the other top headphones and this meeting will allow me to do that. I have the 009's + BHSE but later this year I should get the headamp GS-X l have on order so it'll be interesting to hear what the top headphones at this meeting sound like. Out of the headphones available to listen to at the meeting, does anyone have any thoughts on what would be the best headphones to use with the GS-X ?

My HD800s, LCD-3s, W3000ANVs and T1s all sound pretty amazing out of my GS-X. In fact, so do my Shure SE535s, Westone 4s and TF10s. Quite the versatile amp. wink_face.gif

Thanks for that. I have the Grado PS500's + SE535's but I mainly use them with my Pico Slim + iPod, but I'll try them with the GS-X when I have it. While those two do sound great, they start for me, to feel uncomfortable after so long but I've put new ear pads on the 500's to which they're very comfortable now. While I'm happy the 500's + SE535's, I was asking advice about other top headphones that sound best with the GS-X because they'll be a lot at that event. At that event there's only the LCD -2 not the 3's and the HD700 not the HD800 but I've never been to an headphone event before so I'm really looking forward to it.

P.S. In my previous post which I've rectified, I put headlamp stead of headamp. This was caused because I've recently got a new iMac and it corrects spelling. When I put headamp it didn't recognise that word and corrected it with headlamp which l didn't notice. I guess I'm going to have to be aware of that when I write a post or anything else.

it's ok, i have plenty of invoices that say Headlamp.  My favorite one so far is Head Lamb.

HeadAmp Audio Electronics - home of the Pico and Gilmore amps.  Now with Audeze, Fostex, HiFiMAN, Sennheiser, and STAX.

That's what I use while attempting to build my Blue Hawaii.

We had an impromptu BHSE/007/LL/009 mini shootout at yesterday's 2012 UK meet, which was the first time I'd seen or heard the latter 2 components:

In short, a guy whose name I didn't catch, was trying to decide whether to buy the LL immediately from the local dealer, or wait much longer and pay more for the BHSE. He already has a SRM007t + SR007, but was unimpressed with this combination, so it had been gathering dust for some time.

The-Man-With-No-Name had already tried out the LL at another table, and also the BHSE+007 at my table. Despite the noisy meet conditions, my combination was sounding pretty OK - partly because I had a rather nice analogue-sounding Audio Note CDP on loan and partly because it was often playing Holly Cole's well recorded Temptation CD.

TMWNN asked if he could try both systems side by side. In short, the LL was brought over and we swapped between the LL and BHSE, using the 007 and Holly Cole on the Audio Note as the common factors. TMWNN listened for longer than me, so may well have tried other tracks when I wandered away.

TMWNN came to the same conclusion as me, which to me was as obvious as anything can be under such conditions:

The BHSE was clearly better  with this combination. It was particularly good at pinpointing each component of the "headstage" such that Holly and the surrounding instruments each stood out in a lifelike, lively, yet un-fatiguing manner. In comparison, the LL presented the same "picture" in a more smeared manner, where the images blurred into each other, in a flatter, smoother, and ultimately more boring way. All other sound considerations (e.g. which had deeper bass) seemed irrelevant  in this particular situation.

I'm very wary of A/B comparisons. Sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees. I think this particular situation was so clear cut because the BHSE combo captured a reasonable flavour of what I can recreate at home in the dark: having Holly actually standing next to me singing into my ear. And when that happens, any lesser representation is simply not good enough!

Then we tried the 009 with the LL. This was a much better match than had been the case with the 007. However,  that image smearing was  still present, albeit much less obviously. This produced a good sound. However, putting the 009 to the BHSE was better still. Both TMWNN and I agreed  that the BHSE + 009 bested the 007 on detail, but then we differed slightly: TMWNN preferred the 007 overall because it was less fatiguing.  I didn't notice that (but I do listen at lower volumes than most people seem to). My take: The BHSE + 007 pin points each component in a remarkable headstage. The 009 then gives each pin point extra texture, timbre (and probably a few more descriptions beginning with "t"). Very impressive, although I was hoping for a bigger soundstage from the 009, based on other reports.

Conclusions

  • Look, this was just a meet impression. YMMV
  • I think TMWNN could well be ordering the BHSE soon
  • I'm completely happy with my BHSE+007. One day, I may audition the 009 more thoroughly, but I'm in no hurry
  • The LL+007 is not a good combination, but LL+009 is just fine
  • The LL costs less than the BHSE and is less fuss . It looks smarter in real life than in the pictures and it seems very well built. And the value of having a good local dealer should not be underestimated. So it's got a lot going for it, but it just lost out in this particular comparison

PS, both units had been switched on for 5+ hours by this point

This is exactly what I heard at the Los Angeles meet, same source (Oppo), but different rooms.  Meet was very quiet.

Concur.  The only advantage of the LL is in tonal synergy w/ the 009 IMHO.  Which maybe a big deal or not depending.  I still think the BH is still too delicate sounding for me personally or anyone into rock, pop, etc.   Count me in the T2/Electra camp.
