Mullin is my absolute top pick of the auto museums in the United States to get a visit to (if not the number one worldwide). As an obsessive fan of Saoutchik, Corsica, and Figoni et Falschi, it's a dream every time I make a stop.

I have the Jaaaag (Clarkson voice), Alloy XK120 Super Sport (meaning all-Alu body). S'mine, even if I had to break a record to get it. :D It's the only XK120 that was factory painted in Pearl Blue Sheen, at the behest of the (in)famous importer Max Hoffman, and stayed in his collection until his death in 1981. It's no shrinking violet either, the car was once the JCNA Slalom Record holder for XK cars, and figure 8 skidpad champ in its class for 3 years running. Though the engine is "rated" at 160bhp, it makes closer to 190 and the same for torque. Unlike other XK120s, this one will do 120mph, in fact it's been officially clocked at 133. All original sheet metal, wheels, and drivetrain too, 100% matching numbers car, one of only 10 SS that year in LHD, and IMO the greatest 120 in the world. I hope they all had a good look at her, because she's not going up for sale again in my lifetime. :p

Huh? You mean they couldn't get it on the stage? Or there weren't other bidders?

I was bidding on the `71 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Michelotti NART spider (one of 3 special coachbuilt Daytonas Michelotti built), and the other bidder dropped out before we hit the reserve. A lot of cars didn't make reserve tonight, not because there wasn't interest, but because the reserves were set too high. IMO Gooding is really milking it and they're going to kill the golden egg-laying goose if they don't watch their step. Many people got pi**ed off and left early, Charlie, the auctioneer, saw them and instead of staying quiet he kind of taunted them while they were leaving, and that's not cool at all. I still want the Michelotti spider, but I'm not sure I want to pay what they claim they need. IMO, it's a pretty car, great body work.

Yeah, the Testarossas are going for relative peanuts now, sub $50k has been the norm for a while, about like the 308/328, unless you find one that's been parked and pampered. Then you could pay upwards of 80-100k. The problem is reliability, they break every time you turn around. At least with the limited Ferraris there's more attention to detail, since they're handmade, and the components are of higher quality. They still break, they're Italian after all, but not as often. I was laughing with my mechanic Richard, reliability goes like this:

(Very tight on the first 3)
Japanese-German-American----------------------------------------------------------French-British-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Italian

Flip that scale over for sexiness factor. "Soul" is a temperamental quality. There are exceptions, the Carrera GT is quite sexy, and IMO the best driver's car in the world, but that's mostly an anomaly (and the half-Italian designer). Speaking of the GT, I think it's a great investment. It's recognized as one of the greatest sports cars ever made, and is still selling below MSRP. The F40 is now regularly selling for >$1M, the one yesterday sold for almost 1.5M due to being brand new, yet it and the GT were produced in almost the exact same numbers. The GT is a $1M+ car waiting to happen, it's inevitable. The one I bought at auction, in the Bid Goes On negotiation, is a rare all option car complete with all the accessories/paperwork, in #1 cond, and 9k miles. It's pure investment grade, whereas my other isn't. The yellow one was in a small wreck and had a couple panels replaced and a full repaint. It still drives as good as new but will never be more than a cond 2 car.

That's the Citron. It's a kit car actually, or it's only sold as a kit, that is. Lots of nice, shiny stainless steel.

Wow - I wish I had the cash - I would have asked you to buy one of these for me...

I like you too much to subject you to that. Those XK8s are real money pits, about as bad as an Aston DB7 for breaking, but the parts aren't as expensive.

lol - and I do appreciate you saving me from myself... :D

The XK120 is a FABULOUS car from a FABULOUS period in auto history. However, I am a little worried about you - being pampered by Gooding&Co seems to have had an effect on you - now you actually care who previously owned the car - next thing we know, you'll be encasing the cars in Lucite and storing them away in UV-proof vaults... :p

Bad pun, but what exactly is driving the interest there? Is it the discontinuation of the model?

It's a McLaren F1, likely the most iconic supercar ever built, and there are only 107 of them, possibly 109 if you believe the story of 2 being quietly sent to a very wealthy McLaren patron in Mexico who was trying to avoid the outrageously high import duties on them. I do believe it, there is some photo evidence of them, but they've not been seen anywhere in over a decade. Eventually they'll turn up.

Yes.

I can only imagine (sadly...) the pleasure I'd get from driving such a machine.

Sigh...

Me too. As much as I love the style it's not something that I want to invest that kind of money into. It's cold comfort, but supposedly it drives like a boat, since there's so much unsprung weight hanging off the thing, and it has no anti-roll bars and very skinny tires.

It is really too bad you all can't find a way to visit the Mullin Automotive Museum - I feel so fortunate to have these treasures local to me:

I'd like to, maybe next time I'm on the Left coast. Here's a question, is there ever any actual sunshine here? 90% of the time it's been cloudy, damp, and cold, I wore long sleeves or a jacket everywhere. Reminds me more of England than what you'd expect in California. I went to the beach and the water was downright frigid.

It was the reason I stuck around for the auction, I really wanted that car. The Super Sport 120s don't come up for sale too often, and fewer still are all-original. I'm interested in the ownership on this one, because this is the guy who actually brought British, German, and Italian sports cars to the USA. He was the first importer who could setup a proper supply chain for cars and parts that actually worked. He was also a world class ***hole, and one of the few people who ever intimidated Enzo Ferrari. It's rumored, likely 80% true, that he had a wife and family on both sides of the Atlantic, and enough guns and muscle around him to make Capone look like a small-timer. The Gov't knew about issues with emissions decades before anyone ever said anything about it publicly, same with the DOT with safety, but they didn't wait to act until after he retired due to his health. Coincidence? Unlikely. People feared this guy, and by most accounts, with good reason. Like most tycoons he softened near the end of his life and contributed to philanthropic causes, but I think that was largely to try and keep from going to Hell. :D Also, the car isn't a garage queen, it's been driven quite a lot, and there's the world records it set in its day. So it's historically significant in many ways.

Bad news, the 962 was sold out from under me, this is the second time that I've been burned trying to work a deal in the M.E.. For now, I'm gritting my teeth until the rest of the sale goes through and the other cars are on their way here, but after that I'm thinking about legally going after them. They broke a contract with me and I'm not happy about it. While they are refunding my deposit, supposedly, it's very wrong and I expected better from such a high profile dealer. The real problem is that the Emirates tort system is worse than the USA's, but not in favor of the plaintiff. Essentially you must prove that you are financially damaged almost to the point of ruin, or dead/mangled, to get a favorable ruling, especially if you aren't a citizen there (and aren't Muslim). So...

and no, I'm not trying to sound prejudiced, it's just a reality that most outsiders never get the full benefit of another country's legal system... and it just so happens to be worse in parts of the world where people can still own slaves. I'm kidding! I'm kidding! Really...

Oh that's so 8 nanoseconds ago. Flash Frozen to and hermetically stored at absolute zero is the only way to guarantee no aging or reaction.

No kidding its an F1. Just does not seem to be old enough to have that kind of auction weight behind it at this point in time. I mean the Ferrari was only 16 meg wasn't it?

Fighting City hall is a cakewalk compared to just about any Mid East legal action. You have about as much rights there as a steer at a Texas Barbecue.

I was acquainted with a few people who had first and second hand dealings with your Cats owner. Apparently you could not exaggerate any story involving being on the wrong end of dealings with him. Made money the old fashioned way:)

Hmm - I seem to recall SPECIFICALLY telling you that before your trip! It might have been in a PM - I'm going to go find it. Summer is the WORST time to go to a California beach. It's always overcast and foggy.

Found it - it was in a PM:

Just remember three things:

1) A California beach in August can either be hot & sunny or overcast & foggy. 50/50 chance either way. For example, in Pacific Grove today, the high was 63 deg and foggy/cloudy.
2) Monterey is NOT Florida - the water will be pretty chilly - probably between 60-65 deg F. Also, the beaches in Monterey have more rocky coastline than sand, so the sand might not be right at your doorstep.
3) The water around Monterey is generally NOT safe for swimming - the undertow & riptides are pretty nasty, and the waves will knock her down. Don't let her in the water without you being right there with her.

I know, but the people out here hadn't heard me b*tching yet. Everyone else was as happy as a clam, but it was cold and damp enough to trigger my arthritis and that always sucks. :xf_eek:
