Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

Congrats! The TH900 is extremely revealing and can be unforgiving, especially of 6-8KHz distortion. Unlike many cans, it won't mask and smooth over detail and distortion in this region.

I recommend pairing it with a smoother source like a properly implemented R2R DAC or vinyl, particularly if you listen to a lot of poor recordings (Arcade Fire, metal, Oasis).

I received mine today! All of you already know this but, wow, what amazing cans. The brief listening sessions I had with the 900's previously pales in comparison to the home-and-in-my-own-space experience. I'll sit with them for a bit and offer up a better comparison with my X00's. But, from initial impressions, the staging, imagery, and detail retrieval blow the X00's out of the water. Plus, the extension at both ends of the spectrum is terrific. Deep bass (without the X00's muddiness) and a sparkle to the treble that I quite like.

Anyhow, just some initial impressions.

Oh, and they're absolutely gorgeous! In this moment, I can't fathom giving up the Urushi cups for a Lawton pair. As an added bonus, the mk2 cable sockets don't look as ugly in person.

Cheers!

I just compared an mk2 to the original TH900.  Is it just me or does it sound worse?  They both were burned in, but the original has slightly better mid-bass and more detail.  I returned the MK2, and I'm concerned that if I damage my TH900, I won't find a suitable replacement.

I saw a great deal for the lcd2 for 500, and was thinking about getting, but I already have the th900.

Nice price if you want to try it but I had the LCD-2 R1 and found it bad all around.
I had theLCD-XC much later which to me was pretty similar to the LCD-3 and those were much better and in the league of the TH-900.
But after comparing them long enough with the LA-900 the LCD-XC had to go.

I have noticed that the foam dampers (around the driver) make a lot of difference. The older dampers sounded a bit more open than the newer pair I ordered (for curiosity).
In general, any difference in sound I'd attribute to slight density variance in dampers, ear pad filling foam, and cup damping polyfill, and perhaps also variance in ear pad material (sealing).

I think the tolerances in driver manufacturing process are tighter, so I assume there is not so much difference.

I'm really enjoying this performance on my 900's. It's rare to find strings, standing bass, electronica, hip-hop, and good female and male vocals come together so well (and live at that!). Plus, the energy and fun they're having together makes it a pleasure to watch. Cheers!

They should be exactly the same, unless one is damaged, or a driver is poorly matched.

Hi, I just purchased the th-900mkii with a ifi micro idsd black from adorama for1299
Wondering if that was a good deal?
Also, what's a good dap to pair that set up with?
Is the ifi a good match? Or should I sell it and get a dedicated better dap?
My budget right now is 700 unless I sell the ifi and then I'll have some more.
Few years ago I had a silver micro idsd with grado rs1 and iPhone and the sound was a little fatiguing to me because they were so unconfotable and a little harsh to my ears.
I never heard the fostex before but I read good things.
Thanks!
