you should of been more specific.

either way, the pro 900 aren't as bad sounding unamped as other headphones such as the 600 ohm beyers.

Yes, true. I just thought it was obvious that I was simply talking about the sound quality.

lol. the dt880s 600 ohm are literally pointless to listen to without an amp. max volume sounds like 20% volume compared to regular phones.

the ultrasones are only 40 ohm and get plenty loud with pretty damn good bass response out of my iphone.

Yes, they don't necessarily need an amp in terms of volume. But I thought it would be worth to point out if they did benefit from an amp and whether it would be worth to get them if you didn't have an amp.

We were talking about whether the 900s "need" an amp. They don't.

The question was whether they need one. They don't. That's why I compared them to the 880s. You said they are the same. They are not. Plenty of people will enjoy the 900s without one. NO ONE can enjoy the 880s without one. Volume is part of sound quality.

I just think it is a shame to recommend them unamped. People can enjoy them unamped, but I'm almost certain more people will hate them because they're not driving them properly. Just my 2 cents.

Which brings us back to square one.

They don't need an amp, but sound better with one ... Same as every headphone sounding better with an amp.

But, there ARE headphones, like the 880, which are not possible to listen to without one. They need an amp, no question.

... Hence, the difference between needing one and wanting one.

The 900s sound better (than so many headphones built to be driven direct from source), that it isn't even funny.

That's the point. They sound a lot better with one. But they don't benefit the same as every headphone. ibuds don't benefit as much as Pro 900 does. It is that simple.

If the OP is looking for bass, why not point him toward the D2000s or XB500/700/1000 line.

Even the 500s should outperform the Beats as far as clarity goes, they're only 40ohm and are 104dB/Mw sensitivity so they won't have the power problems that the Ultrasones do.

You could grab the E5 if you don't want to carry a "real" portable amp around. The E5 is only the size of an old iPod shuffle and will drive the high impedance phones a lot better.

+1.

Also on the beyers - do remember that there are 32 ohm versions of the Premium line products; 600 ohm isn't the only option (and the 32 ohm models exist explicitly for portable devices, like iPods). Now, everyone says they sound different, but they do exist. And just like the PRO900, they will run unamped.

The Pro900 indeed does not "need" an amp to play music at an adequate volume, but the truth is that it really doesn't sound that good unamped. So why would you spend so much on headphones if you aren't going to make fully use of their potential? Buying a Pro900 and using them unamped is an even bigger waste of money than buying Beats Pros. I wouldn't be surprised if I would prefer the Beats Pro to the Pro900 from an "unamped" source. The Pro900 sounds metallic, thin and flabby when they don't have enough juice and the treble gets very harsh, to the point of unlistenable for me.

My advice is, get HFI580 for half the price which sounds better than both when unamped. Or get the Pro900 and a decent amp and enter a new level of sound experience.
