Audeze LCD-3 Impressions Thread

To my ears, the HE6 is dead on neutral, while the HD800 is tilted up.

A lot of people are running the HD800s on neutral upstream systems with great results. The HD800s are exceptionally detailed, and while not perfectly smooth, they don't have an emphasis as such on the treble. On a neutral system well extended accross the range they have strong bottom, excellent mids and treble, without any emphasis.

With the LCD-3s if I tune my system to be slightly on the bright side of things they are still clearly warm sounding. I don't at all mind it, but I would never call them neutral, no matter what you do.

"Let me fix this for you:  HD800 are neutral. So are HE-6. So far you've got two of them"

That was all my response was specific towards, Your discredit of Rah's finding's with your own.

Oh yes, that's the couple of glasses of wine underwriting my view. But since I am probably right, I guessed I can get away with it, without having to link to well accepted resources such as a certain 57 headphones review or other well known resources on the web easily accesible to anyone who hasn't heard these headphones. :)

Somehow these threads always end up in comparisons for whatever reason, strange that. :) To try and add any value to the thread, the LCD-3s are  growing on me again recently, as I've recently had the option to tune my system more towards them. I am finding silver interconnects a great benefit.

Impaired judgement, I got it.

You could have said the finding's were by own ears or by some dudes paper review thing.

I have only commented on what I own or have heard, but I appreciate your comments with any of the added value. Just trying to help with your queries.

Seriously, I enjoy my LCD-3s and they are a lot, but neutral they are not. Not at all.
Let me fix this for you:  HD800 are neutral. So are HE-6. So far you've got two of them. The rest in your list are not neutral, as follows: LCD-3s - warm, LCD-2s warmer, T1 - bright, SR-007 MK2 - warm tinted.

Everyone's got their own ears and levels of presbycusis.

It depends on what amp you use.  I also should have said HD800 w/o anax mod, w/ the anax mod I'd say they come very close to the LCD3 surpassing the HE6 in terms of neutrality.  I also think its odd you think the T1 as being brighter than the HD800.  I'll agree that maybe the SR007's are a bit more bright than the HE6 though.

Also I'm not alone.  Not that their opinion is law, but Tyll and Skylab also think so...

"I think the LCD-3 is probably closer to neutral in terms of frequency response than the HD 800. Bass is flatter, fewer peaks in the highs. Resolution and imaging is better on the 800s for me though." -Tyll

" I find the HE-6 to have just a touch more treble energy than is neutral, although overall I find the HE-6 to be an absolutely outstanding pair of headphones, and I listen to them at work almost daily.  The LCD-3 were just better, in every dimension, IMO.  Which isn’t to take away from the HE-6, but I found the LCD-3 to be more neutral, and just slightly more transparent." -Skylab

Well,  I don't think anyone should be "correcting" someones impressions.  That's just one persons opinion, doesn't mean it's the law.  Also quoting others impressions and opinions doesn't mean it's law either.

If you're listening to the LCD-3 with the Mjolnir "IMO" that's very close to the best the LCD-3 can sound.  Also, if your listening to the HE-6 on the Mjolnir that would make the HE-6 sound OK at best.  So the HE-6 really need a good quality high current speaker amp to even compete with the LCD-3 on the Mjolnir.  While the HD800 will require to different amp as well to get the best from it.

So one amp (Mjolnir) with these three headphones may not be the best way to compare.  Each will sound noticeably different, either their best, OK, or their worst.  Maybe..

I'm just saying...

Ironicly, I actually don't like the pairing w/ of the LCD3 w/ the Mjolnir that much.  I liked it w/ the WA22 most.

My impressions of the LCD3, LCD2, HD800, and T1 were based on multiple amps, mjolnir, wa2, wa22, gsx, lyr, soloist, concerto, taboo Mk2, CSP+, peachtree grand, etc...

I have only heard the HE6 on the Mjolnir and Soloist though, but I have a feeling that even if I plugged it into my A21 someone would say I was under powering them lol.

Good - I stand corrected then.  But the WA22 over the Mjolnir with the LCD-3??  We sure do hear different

I use a 10wpc speaker amp for my HE-6.  Underpowered??  Ha..

If you're around Cincinnati - drop by.  I can show you better than I can tell you

the first time I heard the he6 was at a meet in december and it was paired with the mjolnir, listened for like a minute and it was awful but listening to them again at a meet this past saturday with a first watt speaker amp, much much better. Didnt get to listen to them very long though.

Not really an appreciation, but I wonder if anyone here experienced the same:
After 1-2h+ audition sessions my LCD-3 develops pretty noticeable earache in my left ear. Seems like a result of mechanical pressure to the ear by the pads, not the sound pressure, because I usually listen at pretty low volume(around 70dba)

The same and worse. I had left ear throb a few wk's ago from and listening to a bright cable just exacerbates the situation.. Of course the clamp get's better with time unless to bend $1945.00 headphones?

Astounded, Appreciative, and Amped.

Last week I auditioned an LCD2.2 at home. There were no LCD3 available for in-home audition.

The LCD 2.2 took about 5 entire albums to open up (even though demo unit was thoroughly broken in). At the sixth album, my jaw dropped to the floor. I listened for hours into the night, in utter disbelief. As soon as my dealer was open the next day I bought the last LCD-3 he had on the shelf (demand is very high, many dealers including Audeze direct, are out of stock!).

Initially I'll be driving the LCD-3 with my RSA Raptor... but I want to really maximize the LCD-3's potential. I ordered a Decware Taboo MK III to audition (which will take about eight weeks to arrive) and I'll be ordering the Woo Audio WA5-LE as well.

Has anyone heard both the Decware Taboo III and the Woo WA5-LE, preferably side by side, using the LCD-3s? What are your thoughts on which is better suited for the LCD-3s?

Cheers and thanks in advance for your comments.

Frank I will have a WA5 probably about the time your Taboo arrives. He will have them side by side. Granted, the WA5 is more expensive...I would drop him a PM and start a conversation with him about the two amps...

(Nice looking cat.)
My 2 cents: if you are in the price range of the 5, Ray's B52 is worth considering. I have one with my LCD3s and I consider this to be a perfect match.
Nothing sounds or works better with the B52 in the all the phones I've tried than the LCD3. It's a high impedance phone which is good for the B52 with the Dact stepped volume control.
The sound is just plain superlative, meaning the bass is profound and deeply satisfying and rock solid, instruments and vocals are full of life and inner light, and spatial information is very believable
on both micro and macro levels. And subjectively, I just can't stop listening to this combo.

I understand this statement completely.

My experience is the biggest difference in the SQ after the LCD3s was the PS PWD II. I was using a Audio-gd 11.32 with the LCDs up until getting this DAC.

When I first listened to the 11.32 with the LCD3 it was a complete WOW session. And for the 5 months thereafter, from time to time as I was listening I would have WOW moments.

Now ever session is a WOW one. Not in every song because I have some really poor recordings like bootlegs of concerts, but those aside it is amazing to me the depth and the broad spectrum of sound the PS brought to the table. I've just added a Mjolnir and I am awaiting for a Taboo to be built. The reason I know it was the PS DAC that made such a huge difference is before the Mjolnir I was using Ray's Hornet and the sound was still fantastic with the little amp. The Mjolnir took it to a new level but not close in as big an impact as adding the DAC did.
