Nah, you're lucky to get the most recent software on your phone when it releases, and any updates beyond that are considered a blessing from OEMs even if they're 6 months after Google released the source code.

Lol I thought the 4S got its EOL with iOS 9 but maybe I was wrong.

Meanwhile one of my friends is still using his Droid RAZR from 2011 and my ex gf is now using an even older iPhone 4, it's funny hearing them complain about their old crappy phones. XD
RAZR friend wants recs for a new phone, but honestly I dunno what to recommend to him that he can go buy in the Verizon store... He doesn't want a phablet nor a Samesung phone so that throws out the Moto Droid Turbo 2, Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, and LG V20. Doesn't want an iPhone either so that's out the window too. LG G6 and HTC 10 seem pretty uninspired so I can't wholeheartedly recommend those. It seems like the only thing I can find he might like is the Pixel but it feels sooooo weird recommending a Google phone to a non-tech person, especially since I know he will hate getting all the software updates. Orz

It's slightly better now; still like 2-3 months delay for Nougat rollout on some flagship phones from what I saw. It feels like the community builds came out faster.

4S got 9, mb. Still ran like crap on it.

I actually kind of want to get a Lumia 920 just because of how beautiful it is, and I don't really use my S5 for much. It might be problematic since the bus apps for schools with working bus systems don't support anything outside of the big 2 (for obvious reasons). I don't see any Android phone worth getting if we're talking about long-run reliability; LineageOS supported stuff is probably a better bet but LineageOS 14 is taking forever to roll out after that Cyanogen fiasco and I don't know how updates will be after LineageOS cements itself in theplace of Cyanogen.

So strangely enough the best options are an iPhone or a Windows Phone; Pixels are no longer affordable like Nexuses so RIP.

If I did have to get an Android phone, I wouldn't mind an INFOBAR A02 or A03 though.

Best case scenario we see the new Nokia phones styled like the 920, 1020, or 1520 (I'm not sure how I feel about the aluminum framed ones like the 830/930; 925 is okay) running Windows Phone. It sounds like a strange request and doesn't seem like a path Nokia would pursue in the name of profitability but Android is quite the mess. Windows Mobile is a very solid platform; just has 0 apps.

Good luck getting any update on a Samsung phone within 3 months though...

Oh yeah, it was pretty funny watching her daily driving that, especially on Verizon where it doesn't even have HSPA+ support so it was stuck using basically edge for a data connection. >_>

Yeah, good luck getting any kind of third party support. microsoft themselves even gave up on the platform didn't they? So I wouldn't bother, or just try and port an Android ROM to one of them I guess, I dunno if that's possible though. And for that friend he's one of those people that if it isn't broke don't fix it, so he'd rather have the same OS forever I think.

I tried telling him he'd like the iPhone too but he doesn't wanna support a 'communist liberal company like Apple' or something along those lines... And for him at least price isn't really a problem, especially since it feels like Verizon/Best Buy have been doing some pretty good discounts on the standard Pixel, like pricing it at $5/month for 2 years or something like that.

Basically downgraded CPU, camera, and GPU (I think), better battery life (by a bit) and it's now water resistant even without the cover on the USB port.

Oh, and USB is now 2.0 instead of 3.0, and it doesn't include a fingerprint scanner (I think it wasn't that good anyways).

Eeeeeeew, so they downgraded the phone and released it later? Of course they did because Samsung....

Well, the price is also significantly lower, which is why I got it.

Probably should have gone with a newer one though, as it is very choppy. Skips a lot of frames and has high lag, especially when typing. This isn't really an issue with the original S5 as far as I know.

The only real upgrade is a bit more battery life. The camera is technically an "upgrade," but it is just paper specs. High megapixels, but very noisy and absolute garbage low light performance compared to the "inferior" S5 camera.

Android phone manufacturers, that is. Apple supports their iPhones for a very long time. Since the 4s, every subsequent iPhone has received at least 4 years' software and hardware support. The iPhone 4 from 2010 only became entirely obsolete October last year.

Before my 7 Plus arrived, I used an iPhone 5 for a couple weeks and it was still perfectly usable, albeit a bit on the slow side and didn't have Touch ID.

I don't think this thread will ever die.

2 years is essentially the hard limit on Android because that's how Google's Nexus program worked (I don't know if it's still the same policy with Pixel but I'm sure it's the same); 2 years of full OS updates then up to something like 1-1.5 years of additional security updates.

Yeah that's the one part Apple does a good job of. Unfortunately it's an on paper thing because they might have the newest software but the hardware is nowhere near capable enough to run it smoothly most of the time. All I heard is complaints of 4S's and the like running iOS 10 at snail's pace.

Unlikely, high chance the senior members will just vacate it as things slowly start to go to **** (then again that's slightly happened already).

It also slightly depends on the chipset manufacturer supporting newer versions of Android. I can't believe many phones that are "only" 2 years old will not officially receive Nougat, when they're way more than capable.

True, it's the cost of bringing new features to older hardware. If the 4S topped out at iOS 7 we'd hear much less complaining about the speed and more nonsense about "planned obsolescence".

Ah yes, I remember back when we'd traverse up to ten pages a day.

Funny that, I think less than 1% of people actually used USB 3.0 on the S5. You had to turn it on manually, and at some point Samsung just included a regular micro USB 2.0 in the box instead of the wider 3.0 one. People would forcibly insert the 2.0 connector upside down and damage the port, it's great.

I was surprised when Google allowed the S5 to run Marshmallow given the stricter requirements concerning biometrics, because back in the day there was an exploit that allowed a hacker to gain direct access to the S5's fingerprint reader.

HTC did it once too, with the M8s. Nowhere near as bad as Samsung's Galaxy S2 "Plus" though; it was worse than the normal S2 and yet is a "Plus".

SoC manufacturers rarely provide drivers past 2 years because the but vendors never ask for them, and then it becomes this perpetual loop.

That's why Apple's ability to design their own SoCs is so crucial because they can provide support for 3 years or longer spans.

Regarding USB 3 on phones (we had a pretty long discussion about this in the thread Skype) it has the tendency to disrupt 2.4 GHz wifi signals. I think the new MBPs are actually reported to have WiFi issues when a USB C Device is plugged in. S5 prompts you that WiFi will be disabled in USB 3 mode. I haven't heard complaints on other phones with USB 3.1 though so might just be shielding (Lumia 950 (XL), Note 7, HTC U Ultra, and possibly a few more flagships coming later this year. I haven't read into USB 3.1 Rev 2 spec but it's possible they changed the clock of the USB logic.

Anyways almost nobody uses USB 3 on phones since everything is streamed now. It's a pretty niche market.

A few hours of my life wasted. I demand a 15% refund along with my new one! Or maybe they can switch to the 4k one for free!

Hope the RMA goes well, now if only you had next business day on-site support like I recommended.... i kid I kid. XD

I think since the 6S has 2 gigs of RAM, it will hold up just fine when it becomes 4 years old. The A9 was when the SoC team really hit their stride IMO.

And then you got in your Delorean, fired up your flux capacitor and came back from 1965, I presume.

I guess I'll always look forward to watching gundam stuff. at this point to me it's like vampires and zombies, I know that at least half(I'm being generous) of what's made will be absolute crap and always the same story, but somehow I'm still excited about watching new stuff.
gundam IBO is pretty cool IMO, I feel like they did a nice job with the psychology of most characters. the only thing that really annoys me in all gundams, is what I call the LOTGH's syndrome:

Fair enough.

To be honest though it sounds like you're pretty picky about your electronics. Generally that necessitates spending more money so you get less compromises so maybe next time save up a bit more for a more premium model.

Lol that particular friend probably wouldn't have any trouble living in 1965. :p To each their own I guess though...

If MTP wasn't so bad I'd use the heck out of USB 3.0.
