My setup is:  PC Soundcard (X-Fi Titanium HD) -> Amp (Marantz PM7200) -> Speakers (B&W 603 s2).

I often play games or listen to music (FLAC or 320 kbps mp3) through headphones (Sennheiser HD 25-1) plugged into the PM7200.  Music I mainly listen to is house / dance / electronic (plenty of bass often involved).  Just lately I've realised I've always been somewhat underwhelmed by the HD 25-1 'phones and thought I might upgrade.

Budget is £300 but I don't want to spend it for the sake of it.  Would be glad of some suggestions ... perhaps it might be better to get a headphone amp as well / instead?

As for closed / open design ... I'm unlikely to go out of the house wearing them so sound leakage is not a problem; basically sound quality is what I'm after.

Would be a bonus if they work well with iphone/ipods too.

Cheers

Hi Four-Four

I'm in a similar situation but looking only for closed back so not really up on open cans though haven't considered the Shure's. Amongst the one's that may (or may not) be any use to you are:

AKG are supposed to be releasing their new K550 but they are slow bringing them out. There's a (long) thread about them which picks up at page 30 when a head-fi member gets a pair to review: http://www.head-fi.org/t/553944/akg-k550-new/435

I Had a listen to the Denon AH-D2000 - it had huge bass but souded too dark (actually preferred the sound of the HD-25 SP's to the Denons).

If you're not in a hurry the Focal Spirit One headphones look nice and the company has a good history with speakers - http://www.head-fi.org/t/559712/focal-spirit-one-headphones. No word on how they sound yet but the blurb sounds good

The Philips Fidelio L1 look like they might be good phones + have some kind of iphone controls - http://www.head-fi.org/t/577819/philips-fidelio-l1-upcoming-headphone. Hmm, wish I could settle for a headphone that is actually for sale (other than the ATH-W1000X which I am lusting over but are way over budget).

There's a full-sized headphone buyers guide on AVguide's site - http://www.avguide.com/buyers-guide/playback-guide-full-size-headphones-2011 which if for nothing else has some pretty pictures

Good luck with your headphone hunting
