I'm looking at a few pairs of headphones mostly the akg k701 or i can actually buy the ad700 and m50(180 for both) for a little less then the akg 701(200) I won't have an amp but might in the future so if anyone can help me out that would be great. I will be using the headphones for mostly movies/ first person shooter video games and usually rock music i like my instrument seperation :p.

I'm probably starting to sound like a fanboy by now, but the Fischer Audio FA-011's are gaming monsters, and really great with movies, sound OK to me for rock music, not sure they excel, it depends how you want you rock to sound, not as detailed as some cans but epic for the price.

I've never tried the mixamp, so I can't comment there, but I have a pair of 702s (same as 701s) and they sound really dull and lifeless to me compleatly unamped, I would at least recommend some sort of amp if you are planing on getting them.... Otherwise I would just skip strait to the ad900/700......but its your call, and with all that said,  I do like the 702 for gaming....

<Sigh> K701's without an amp or with a cheap amp..

Oh well good luck with that, you're going to need it.

What are you going to be plugging your headphones into, on board sound card?

My ATH-AD700s are great for late night easy listening, but their lack of bass is a turn off.
Have you checked out the Sennheiser HD-558, like the AD700, but with more bass
and costs less then the AD900s.

I Think K701s just plain suck for rock-music. These AKGs just give a very poor bass-punch - the low-region is barely there and the treble becomes too much when you push the volume. I'd steer well clear of them if I were you. Don't say you weren't warned :)

BTW, the K701s are very uncomfortable, because of the headband-design. And the amp will NOT change the overall character of the HP.

Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 250-Ohm, I really really like the sound from these.
