Grado modders go Magnum
Nov 26, 2015 at 3:28 PM Post #3,766 of 4,994
Just one quick question! Can Magnum drivers be put into other headphone cans than grados??? My Grado's sound really good to me already and I don't do too much mod work, so I don't want to risk breaking them.

It's a 45mm driver (I think). So by all means, put it in different enclosures. Doesn't have to be Grado-like cups. Make a baffle for it and put the drivers in, close the back and damp the hell out of it :)

In theory, yes. Check out Larry from Headphile's "the Vixen". It doesn't use the Magnum driver, but it might be something worth trying...

I have a question for either of you (or anyone who can help) where on http://www.headphoneku.com/ did you see the gimbals and rods listed?

because i looked under Grado accessories and saw the listings for 'wooden housing', 'aluminum housing' and 'others' and wasn't able to find the rods/gimbals listed under any of those ???

also how to convert Rp's to USD? because i noticed that for example the Alu half silver cups list for Rp 350.000,-
which appears to be the same price they are selling their L cush bowls for???

that can't be right.can it? wouldn't make any sense at all for half silver half aluminum cups to cost the same as a pair of foam ear cushions.

and when i use google and type in 'Rp 350.000,- to USD' it tells me 350 Indian Rupee equals 5.272 US dolllars...somethings not right there

guess what came in the mail today
after a long  nap and a fueled by a big plate of leftover turkey and stuffing
a put these together..... sound is ... well great
haven't been listening for long but bass is clearer less muddy
mids and highs bright and clear not harsh at all
instrument separation is excellent sound stage is approaching 3d

this is a temporary build, still working out a headband
drivers are much smaller than the cup, after adding a layer of adhesive felt i had
drivers fit perfectly, this must be part of the design
cable is slipped through the bottom and held in with a little adhesive shrink tubing

Great photos and feedback on the C6's! how did you end up getting them in red and blue?
I wasn't aware they could be ordered in colors other than what is shown on the shapeways page.

Ah those look nice and minimal. That's the 1.0 cup design though, the current one is at 1.2, with cable hook and driver fitting/seating being better, I believe.

not really an update on my magnums, but i received my mojo,
and from this sr60i i'm using,
i can scarcely imagine how ridiculous my c6/v6/l-cush setup will sound on this. :)

another two weeksish, but this mojo is quite the device.

Received package from Shapeways on 11/28.  Took a few quick pictures just so folks could see what they looked like...

Packaging...

Polished Metallic Plastic...This has a silver appearance overall, with particles of metal, similar to metal flakes in paint, visible in the surface, and a matte finish somewhat similar to a cast aluminum piece...

Black Strong and Flexible, inserted in MS1 headband for comparison...
The finish on the Black Strong and Flexible is very flat black, with a matte texture.

Side by side with MS1 for comparison, you can see the difference between the gloss Grado finish and the matte black strong and flexible, as well as the height difference between the MS1 "2009 Version" cup.  Had the MS1 been the "original" version, the height would be about the same...

Looking down on Black Strong and Flexible cup (without driver), lots of open space....

Looking down on Polished Metallic Plastic in MS1 frame (no driver)

Side by side view...

General observations about these two materials:

These are extremely light weight.

These are very open.

While I wouldn't consider these fragile, you could break through the grille with a determined effort to do so, but the benefit is nearly no acoustic reflection. Shouldn't be an issue with any due care. They are both nylon, with the typical durability expected of a part made with nylon in this size.

The finish on both parts is matte in appearance, the Black Strong and Flexible is very flat black, like the appearance of charcoal.

The Polished Metallic Plastic, though polished, is not a shiny or glossy finish, but more like you see if you break an aluminum casting and can see the metallic crystals. If not polished, it would have likely been as flat a finish as the black is. While I like the metallic finish, and think it looks nice especially in contrast against the black Grado gimbal and foam pad, if you are looking for something that mimics machined aluminum, this is not it.

They easily fit in and out of the Grado gimbal with a slight effort, perfect fit.

The light weight of these C6 cups should make for a very comfortable headphone for prolonged listening.

There is a very slight density difference in resonance between the two, bouncing them both slightly on the counter, the Black Strong and Flexible resonates about one chromatic note step below the Polished Metallic Plastic. Both parts have a resonance (all things do), but generally sound pretty dead. Connected to the V6, especially with the provided foam tape, should be very inert. You will essentially be hearing the driver itself with minimal interference from the cup.

Hope this feedback helps others with their selection, and I look forward to seeng the results in others choices of materials.

The black ones look pretty good from the pictures. I almost think this design is better than the new revision with the extra material for the cable. It looks like the grill does a nice job with the cable. I'd probably just drill a hole in the bottom rather than out the back though. Hope to see some of the other options in photos!
