Yes, except the celebrity endorser, Dr. Dre was the spark for Beats.  No one cares about Yamaha headphones if they don't stand out with their sound. I don't think teens will be looking to the Yamaha name for style saying," Yo, those are some phat Yamahas!"

I don't mean to burst any of your bubbles but does anybody know which one is better out of the headphones I'm trying to compare?

Better is subjective.  Can you better define "better"?  I have not heard the Sony, but did audition the Beats Pro.  They aren't bad at all and do have slammin' bass, but are not an "all arounder" as they are only good with specific genres.  Also, they are incredibly heavy on the head- felt like my neck was straining after awhile.  If you can wait a month, you will have several more excellent options like:

Sony MDR-1
V-Moda M-100
Yamaha Pro 500
PSB M4U1
Sennheiser Momentum
AKG Tiesto
Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro

This might be the biggest season for new premium portable basshead cans released ever.

I wouldn't get XB1000 for that. I'm with Craigster, wait a month, all these are promissing alternatives for what you look for, they all have this "theme"; bass emphasized portable headphone with focus on overall great sound.

The Beats Pro are quite good for electronic music.  Long story short, it was the Beats Pro that started me on the search for the perfect basshead cans.  I tried them out at a store and they really sounded great... but of course I was pumping Infected Mushroom through them, so that was probably a bit unfair since that is their strongest genera.  Anyway, I will have my M-Audio Q40s Tuesday, and I'll probably post my impressions and maybe a full review if I'm inspired.  Since it's been a while since I heard the Beats Pro, I probably won't be able to contrast them very accurately though.

But for half the price, if they even sound close, it's a win... but I expect them to sound better.

So they are flat like sennheiser open cans? Also I hear they respond to amping very well unlike beats pro so I'm wondering if using my fiio e6 would increase the bass using EQ or with the amp itself without EQing. In the end, is the overall sound quality better?

After purchasing the E-Dac, I am sure I will stick with the q40 for years before even think about an upgrade. The only reason to change my mind could be going for smth less ugly, but for now the sound is all that matters to me. IM sounds magical as well as everything else from trance to classical.

I'm feeling the same when coupled with digiZoid ZO2.1. ^^ I listen also to various genres, with the right amp Q40 works well for all genres, it's not impressive in terms of soundstage size/open-ness though and for some music I had probably wanted a more open soundstage but I'm using my tweaked dolby headphone config for foobar2000 which enhances the soundstage greatly at which I can listen to any genres with very satisfactory results.

A good amp/dac combo was my final target and  I am more than satisfied right now. Some parts of the sound were hidden somewhere in the background - I just didnt realize it until adding the DAC. And yes - the soundstage is not great but is good enough for me. I didnt miss it with the atrios too.

The XB1000 has deep bass, and has comparatively good clarity as far as basshead cans go. You're not going to get a lot of excitement out of it un-amped. It needs to be paired with a good bass boost amp to really shine, though.

Like the others have said, just wait around and see what the new cans have to offer.

My fiance didn't even know Yamaha made headphones. Probably nobody's going to take a look at these Yamahas and associate them with "street cred".

Gahhhh.... No Zo2.1s available.... D:
Is anybody using ZO2.3s with the Q40s?

I have both ZO2.1 and ZO2.3 but greatly prefer the ZO2.1 over ZO2.3 with it, in fact I don't think the synergy with ZO2.3 is that good with Q40 and I generally don't recommend ZO2.3 for other people with Q40. At least you used to be able to find a few ZO2.1 on ebay somewhere, unsure about the link for aprox $80 or so.

The problem with ZO2.3 and Q40 is that the mids & highs just doesn't get as forward and exciting as it gets with ZO2.1 and the bass is also punchier with 2.1, with ZO2.3 it's slightly softer than I optimally want. I think the SRS Listen amp I bought on ebay for like $42 has better synergy (and especially midrange performance) versus ZO2.3 (altough I miss the bass performance out of the ZO obviously) but ZO2.1 does both and a bit better so too!
