ULTRASONE NEW ANNOUNCED HEADPHONE Signature Pro
Jan 2, 2015 at 12:29 AM Post #2,086 of 2,431
Thinking of upgrading my amp. My Purity Audio KICAS is pretty sweet with these, but I'm thinking tubes. Any suggestions? I'm actually specifically curious if anyone has tried the WA3 with Sig Pros. I know OTL is supposed to be "meh" for low impedance phones, but Sig Pros have been known to defy logic on occasion.

Thanks to M-13, I am now the proud owner of a Sig Pro too! I hope to be able to really check them out extensively in the next few weeks. I just finished reading this thread, so thanks to everyone for all the good info you guys have shared!

I don't really have anything more substantive to say-- just wanted to drop in and leave a 'Cheers!' with you fellas

You'll love them

The things I really like about the sig pros is that they are great quality, easy to drive and remarkably robust. I just fold them and chuck them in my backpack and they hold their own. No prima donna padded case or heavy duty amplification, just a decent source and you're away.

Thanks fellas!! I've been interested in these for a couple of years and just finally came into the right mix of available funds, available Sig Pro, and nothing else higher on my priorities list. I've came close to buying a pair a few times in the past (one of which I had to back out when I found out that one of the previous owners had been a smoker-- and judging by what a colossal pain it was for other members to get rid of that nasty smell once it's set into the Sig Pros, I'm very glad I rescinded my offer), but the stars finally aligned here.

Truthfully, I'm trying to find that perfect set of closed isolating headphones. I have the T5p and Alpha Dogs, and have owned the Sig DJ and many others at various times, but I haven't been able to find that right mix just yet. The T5p is a world-beater in my opinion, but it lacks bass quantity (which is increasingly problematic in noisy environments), has decent but not stellar isolation, requires amplification to truly shine, and isn't particularly ergonomic in terms of its portability, so it won't work. The Alpha Dogs are highly impressive, superlatively comfortable, and very effectively isolating, but they are too big to carry around and also require amplification to get good sound. The Sig DJ just had too much bass and (in my probably unpopular opinion) was a singularly unattractive headphone, but was otherwise very good. Here's hoping the Sig Pros check all the boxes!!

My initial impressions are quite positive, with the following provisos: the bass (midbass particularly) is more exaggerated than I prefer; the mids are bit more recessed than I'd like (I listen to a lot of guitar-driven music and really want to hear the texture and tone of the guitar lines); and I might need to try out the cord or tissue spacing trick on the pads that someone listed earlier, as my left hear touches a portion of the headphone and gets sore. The first two I plan to monkey around with EQ to see if I can get them in line (and there have been positive reports of the Sig Pro's amenability to equalization), and I'm working on subtlely changing the headphone position to see if I can get the comfort up to speed on the left side.

Overall, looking for truly world-class sound in a closed, isolating portable headphone is apparently one of the most difficult things to find in our hobby, and these puppies do a damned fine job, at least so far. I want to do proper comparisons when I've got the time, but my initial thought is that these will be sticking around for a while .

Thanks to everyone for all the great information you guys have shared thus far, and I look forward to being able to contribute my own info soon!!

When I had the Sig pro first at home, I also thought the mids are a bit recessed or stand back. This is also that I come from Grado HP and the beyerdynamic DT1350. They all have the mids emphasized for my ears, which is one reason why I like them. The mids are the soul of music for me. Guitars, voices it all happens there. This was one part where I first was a bit disappointed in the Sig Pros. What I liked about them from the first moment on was the bass. It is there when it is in the recording but not overlaying the mids. For my ears the Grado PS 500 had a midbass hump that is taking the mids back. The Sig Pro don't have this. After more listening, I realized a lot depends on the recording. There are albums that shine with the Sig Pro and others that are not going well. I also find it the first headphone that is picky on the amp. They don't go well with my canor TP10: the bass is becoming more boasted and less precise. With the ipod touch they sound ok, sometimes the mids are a bit back still. With the same songs I have this impression less when I listened with the HP amplifier of my CDP. This sounds so far the best. But I have no means to control if all those listenings were done with the same volume, so I might be wrong there. All I wanted to say is give them a bit time and just listen to them. I think they are good HP for closed ones. Right now I find myself even at home more often reaching to the Sig Pros than to my Gradessandros.

Valid points, especially considering I do tend to do the majority of my listening on headphones that have a very different tonal balance (Ety ER-4PT in addition to the others I mentioned, ATC monitors, etc). To be clear, though, I'm very much enjoying these suckers for now (listening in bed off my tablet while I type this). Jessy Lanza, FKA Twigs, Massive Attack et al absolutely SLAY on these!!

Can't beleive I am saying this but at this point in time I actually prefer my Sigpro over my ed8LE. I've lived with both of them for a while now but have been listening to my AT woodies more than anything. Those have a strong midrange and jumping right to the ed8 is pretty rough. Grabbing the sig pro is no issue though as it exceeds them in most ways and is more balanced than the ed8. Eating my hat at this time....
