OpenOffice vs. MS Office

Hello, I was wondering if OpenOffice 4.0.0 is a good alternative to Microsoft Word 2013 and since there were already threads about whether or not older versions of OpenOffice were good alternatives to older versions of Microsoft Word and/or Office, I thought that I would just post in one of those said threads instead of creating a new one of my own. So I posted in this one (even though the last post was from years ago). EDIT: If you do not think that OpenOffice 4.0.0 is a good alternative to Microsoft Word 2013 but you know of other programs that are please tell me (they don't necessarily have to be free but it would be nice if they were). I would prefer not to spend as much money as Microsoft is asking for Word or one of the Office suites but I will if it comes down to it. Thank you.

Depends on your circumstances. If you don't want to buy MS Office then there's no better option than LibreOffice.

That said, LibreOffice Writer is a perfectly acceptable alternative to MS Office, as long as its isolated, meaning you don't need to share those files with MS Office users. I've used it at home without any issues.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will check LibreOffice out.

MMmmmm OO. Yes....it is so good. Though...standards being what they are, Word still rules the world. 'Tis sad.

Ironically, the ISO standard is actually OpenDocument and not Word documents.

I didn't even check. It's nonetheless ironic.

Another issue is that the .odt to .doc conversion has always been troublesome because a lot of it is guesswork. MS never fully opened the documentation to their formats, and hence they've prevented almost all Open Source office suites from using their files.

I've seen situations where small offices have all used LibreOffice without any issues.

Another easier way to get around the document conversion is to use a pdf if the document is not supposed to be edited by others. Works perfectly anywhere.
