Assuming the mSATA drive  is stable with the USB adapter, can provide enough current to the mSATA, there should be no difference for a modern USB 3.0 adapter.
It could be the USB adapter didn't write the same partition table to the mSATA drive, GPT VS. MBR table, a dump of the partition table can identify the problem. I suggest strictly follow the formatting instructions on Rockbox wiki, "manual restore", "FAT32 conversion" to correctly format the mSATA drive, there shouldn't be any issue.
Pay attention to MBR, FAT32, and physical sector size.
Rockbox's handling of physical sector size is not standard, it is not a bug but rather a feature, we have to follow the non standard approach by Apple's firmware.

Do you mean manual conversion per this link?

I am not an expert on this but what I can see is that the Maximum Cylinder size if larger than 1023, which means that it is a calculated value, all depends on how the software interpret it. An actual dump of the partition table may tell the difference.

Even if everything is wrong with the partition table, iPod should fall back into diskmode, i don't see why it will be the true reason for a SAD face. This is a myth but at this moment I can not justify buying a 1TB drive just for testing, i already have 3 mSATA SSDs.

Yeah I am just curious why the msata drives formatted thru USB won't be recognized. It reminds me the 480GB Mushkin msata which also failed to be recognized by ipod. I assume the same issue with formatting via USB. Anyways, thanks for the info. Well, at least dr408517 has confirmed a format thru MB will work.

Off topic: Do you know which two caps from classic 6g or 7g board can be removed so they can be wired directly to the lod audio channel pins (same #3 and #4 pins as the 5g?)?

i personally tried two Mushkin drive with different controller stepping, and they won't work. The power rating must be bogus, the peak current need is too high.

The classic model is already capless output. The cirrus logic chip have an internal charge pump that supplies a negative voltage rail, as a result there is no dc bias on there output. This is also true for headphone output, capless, Their sound is crisp clear, however kind of too "digital" to my taste.

That's good to know about the Classic circuitry. It sounds like my amp UHA-6S which implements a capless circuitry capable of compensating the 2V input from my capless diymod. To my ears no caps are the best "caps" in terms of SQ.

I have an ipod 5th generation 60gb, i want to upgrade it to a higher capicity, i already put rock box on it, ive also got an external battery for it that gives me about 400hrs. i listen to lossless music and i have ath m50 headphones, no amp (yet),

the front and back are scratched to hell, and its white, i plan on putting a black front plate and button and click wheel on there. is there a black back available for purchase anywhere?

i found this back, it says 240gb on it, which is pretty cool bc for hard drive selection i was considering getting a 256gb sd card and putting an cf-sd adapter in there....

alternativly im interested in knowing if there is a high capicity platter style HDD i can use instead?

I read on another forum somthing about some logic boards not accepting higher capicity, is this true?

finally my last concern is that currently the i pod is coming slightly apart already, will i need additional parts to make the case sit flush once i get a new back and front piece? here is a pic

any other suggestions welcome

hi guys
I couldn't resist. I did order the tarkan iflash sata adapter and the 2000ma battery kit from Alex in Shenzhen
atsmile.gif

Here I do have some iPods. I will try the msata mod with a 5gen 30gb and a 5.5gen 80gb....and of course with the Rockbox Beyondwind Batch.

NOW, which msata (around 500gb) to buy.......Samsung (MZ-MTE500BW) 500gb or the Crucial (CT480M500SSD3) 480gb (Samsung 512 cost in europe more than the 1tb ssd)

@cmarti
@dr408517

You seem to be the guys with the most experience.

Do both SSDs work with the final retail Tarkan Adapter or would you strongly recommend one over the other. I tend to Samsung cause I read that the heat is much less than the crucial. correct?

Thanks for your competent answer.... I count on your opinion, hehe...

Looking sooooo forward for my SSD-iPod full of FLAC music

I have successfully used a Samsung 512gb and a Crucial 480gb and it's my opinion that the Samsung works better, almost no heat compared to the Crucial.

I think you will do great with any of them. I currently use the crucial 480gb in my slim 5.5th gen iPod and I get maybe 10 hours of battery.

Now with Alex's battery it feels like the battery never drains... huge step up!

Thanks for your feedback.

Concerning Samsung: You talk about the 512 gb, is this correct?
I was thinking about buying the Samsung with *just* 500 gb, as the 512 cost more than double of the 500, here in europe. Even more than the 1tb Samsung Evo 840.
Did you or someone else ever try the "just" 500 Samsung? If yes, did it work with the tarkan adapter or is is not to recommend?

And finally, may you please write me/in here the exact model name/number of the 480 crucial and the samsung 512 ? Not that I am gona order a wrong one

Thanks so much

I tried it but didn't work because I formatted it via USB, my PC does not have a mSATA port.

Crucial: CT480M500SSD3
Samsung: MZMTE512HMHP
