The Beyerdynamic Tesla DT 1350 Impressions thread

Hello dt1350 people!

I`ve never posted in this thread but my wife recently gifted me with a pair of these.
I haven`t really had a chance to listen yet but I have a question MAYBE someone can answer:

How many different versions of these have there been over time?

Mine is new (and it wasn`t from the recent Massdrop deal) was purchased last week and it has a straight cable and black lettering on the black cups.
I`ve noticed the pictures of the older versions(including the so-called facelift version) have white lettering.
Mine also has the black wrap around covering on the supports.

Anyway, just curious!

Thanks....

I guess you could say there have been three varieties:

The first DT1350 - a straight cable with thinner ear pads and head band pads
The DT1350 CC - a coiled cable with thicker ear pads and head band pads, and they stopped putting the grey cover on the cups
The second DT1350 - the same as the DT1350 CC except for having a straight cable

Thanks for your response but I`m still confused.

You mention "grey" cover. The t50p(for example) has a grey cover.I`ve never seen any pictures of a dt 1350 with grey, only black and black with white lettering.

I`ve seen at least 4 variations:

The 3 you mention here(assuming by grey you mean black with white lettering)and the original so-called "facelift" version with different pads and more black stuff around the headband BUTwith the black with white lettering.

Anyway, any more detailed info would be welcome....

^^^ Mine is the original DT1350

Looks right fine to me

.

Gives me re-assurance seeing it still is fully intact.
I`ve read a few(very few) reports online about the initial version having issues with the black plasticy stuff on the headband coming apart.

As I`ve said, I just got mine 3 days ago as a gift and it seems to me the newest variety(no picture at the moment

).
I`ve spent the last 2 nights listening to it and it is much darker than I anticipated.
More details later....

As far as I know the facelift version always had the black cups with embossed logo. BUT someone once said that the original dies have the same logo... beneath the outer cup shell with the white logo. I did not check that as I don't care about that aspect (I think both versions are quite nice)...

There seem to be hybrid models out in the wild where parts got slightly mixed up during assembly. Nevertheless the pads, headband padding and the availability of a coiled cable option were the only real differences, drivers and tuning were not modified.

Oh, and to add to the confusion:

This is my original DT1350, but with the larger pads... they were available as an accessory then and became standard with the facelift.

The funny thing about these headphones, and others that are intended for the same purpose is that they do tend to sound a bit dark in an inside environment.

These are classed and marketed as ENG (Electronic News Gathering) headphones - basically outdoor professional headphones, much like the the Senny HD 25.

Get them into an outside environment where the isolation doesn't work so well with low frequencies and they'll start to show you how neutral and enjoyable they are.

As with a lot of headphones the bass is boosted a bit to compensate for that lack of low end isolation in outside conditions.

I've heard a lot of headphones in my time and, really, these are pretty much my go to for portables, and eclipse everything I've heard in the same category, including the legendary HD 25.

Thats what I think about them too... really good, especially given their size. A fantastic portable headphone that works well with even mobile sources of limited power such as a smartphone.

The fluffies pads, I call these. They add a lot more comfort than the stock DT1350s for sure.

I really should get a set of the new pads.  Where is everyone getting them from?

I order them direct from the Beyerdynamics distributor in my region.

Alternatively, you could purchase the beyer T51p pads instead, which are said to be comfier and have more bass than the regulars according to this "mod" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TO_9qwA1sb0). Basically, the newer facelift versions of the 1350's are said to have less bass and more pronounced treble because of less clamping force so he advises the T51p pads as a replacement to fix that problem. I don't know how accurate this is but it seems sensible.

Thanks for your thoughtful response!
Yes this makes perfect sense to me and this is in fact the signature I was hoping for

My original impressions were a bit surprising as I had read several reviews suggesting the tonality to be very similar to the T1.
Having owned the T1 for 2 years I am still searching my imagination to clarify such a comparison.

I haven`t had the T1 for over a year though. Also the closed back and reduced size of the dt1350 is probably affecting my perceptions.
The one big difference in tonality, in my own personal recollection, is the tamed treble response on the dt1350.
The treble on the T1 was a bit much for my taste.

Ok so after spending time outside all night last night recording the lake sounds where I work, i can`t comprehend how the designers failed to take into account the obscene micro phonics of the cable. Other than that everything is just fantastic. Unfortunetly recording birds at dawn in an uber quiet environment was quite difficult at times.Seeing the impeccable design in all other areas(and the fact that this headphone has been around a while and re-issued, improved upon etc) this oversight is baffling.
