The Beyerdynamic Tesla DT 1350 Impressions thread
Jul 5, 2014 at 11:23 AM Post #736 of 1,323
Looks like they made a great first impression! I'm having the "lack of bass problem" that you mentioned due to not getting a perfect seal. I am still trying to decide if I should buy the velour ear pads or the t51p pads. So far I'm leaning towards the t51p pads since the Facelift version comes with these and so few have commented on the veloura.

I personally love the sound of these headphones for really two reasons... Sound isolation and how natural they sound for closed cans. Similar Sennheiser options that I've tried just sound a bit hollow to my ears.

Try moving the cups back on the ear, and maybe opening up the headbands.  That should get the bass you are missing...

I've trid every configuration. The original pads just don't seal right on my ears. The fluffier pads do seal nice. I tried the facelift version at and the bass was top notch.

Oh, and I also listen at lower volume than most...

Well, I've now got 2 or 3 hours on them, and my first impressions are that these are rather special little headphones, aren't they?

I'll get the negatives out the way first:-

NO DETACHABLE CABLE. Yes, I shouted that, and to be truthful I knew this when I bought them, but I'm still going to complain about it. At the price I paid for them it's kind of forgivable, but at full market price it's absolutely criminal that the cable is not user replaceable.

Wind noise and cable microphonics. The wind noise I get with these is higher than with the HD25 and I guess I'm used to the HD25 having virtually no cable microphonics. This, however, is balanced out in that neither of these problems are excessive, and the pads don't rustle like they do on the HD25.

A very slight hollowness in the lower midrange, but this psychologically disappears after a couple of seconds listening.

The positives so far

A midrange to die for - it's kind of contradicting my previous comment, but in truth I've never heard a midrange so beautifully rendered in such small headphones

Bass. I don't always agree with Tyll's headphone reviews, in fact he was straight out wrong with the senny Momentums IMO, but when he says the DT1350s have a bottomless bass he's not exaggerating. The bass on these is tight, deep, punchy and no bloom - perfect.

Treble - all present and correct, beautifully detailed without a hint of harshness, and musical - quite frankly they make the HD25s sound a tad sloppy - if you can believe that.

I've only played electronica through these so far, but I'm beginning to believe that I could run out a demo mix with these, something that was difficult to do with the HD25s

All in all I'm very happy, and will report back when I've had the chance to listen to some other genres.

I can second most of your points, except for the cable: I don't see it as a big problem. Its very durable (and I did bad things to it) and any mechanism for an easy swap would compromise the miniscule driver housings I guess...

Oh, and as far as I remember the HD25 have a SPL max of 120dB, not sensitivity... the DT1350 can reach 129dB btw, but thats merely numbers... I don't want to ruin my ears by trying

I'm a big fan. I sold my first pair awhile ago but will be buying a new pair.

Great headphone this is. Proud to have one. I have hardly put any hours on it. What is the ideal burn in time to get the optimum from the DT1350?
Can i keep it running overnight for a couple of days.. is that a good way to achieve burn in? And if so.. at what volume level.. average? Loud? any more tips?

General recommendation is to run it for about 100 hours at about 85db levels. Which is slightly on the louder side of normal listening. But definitely not on loud because it can cause damage to the components. That is pretty much something I did for almost 200 hours using "burn in tracks" that are playing frequency sweeps. They are not musical in any way. Search online (Youtube) and you should be able to find something.

Funny how you are not the only one that is doing that. I met another at the headphones shop and he did the same thing. I guess there is something really special about this package of little wonder. I find it the best companion to carry about when I am traveling, unlike full sized headphones that takes up too much of precious real estate for carry on luggage.

Don't waste your time with that. The only thing that really needs some time to settle is the pads... and that only happens while actually wearing them. I once changed my pads (bought the larger pads available as spare parts for my original DT1350) and again noticed that the seal and with it the bass response gets better after about 2 weeks of usage.

Actually I might just buy another one anyway so I can have one in my home studio (yes, they're almost as good as my Q701s when it comes to finding problems in a mix), and the other can then stay in my bag - I hate it when I rush out in the morning and forget my HPs.

Thanks for making me feel that I am not alone. That is why I have three pairs of HP. They STAY where they work. LOL!

I ordered the T51p pads for my pre-facelift dt1350. They should be in today or tomorrow. I will post my thoughts.

Just so you know, the facelift pads are very similar to the original pads, but are slightly larger. The t51p pads are quite different to either and are more comfy. I wanted to try them with the 1350's due to d.thorn's youtube vids, but never had the chance.

Thanks for your responses. I will burn them in with the frequency sweeps. i have these files, i have used them in the past on my home theater subwoofers and speakers.

plakat, i use them barely 1 hour in a day, if i keep them for 200 hrs it might take me years.. :) I use my Vsonic GR07 most of the time.

By the way, whats a good recommended amp for the DT1350?

You're free to let them play for themselves of course, but its not going to change anything. The pads need some usage to get softer... you can knead them with your fingers as well. Point is that the seal gets better when the pads get a bit softer, therefore bass response increases to the level intended by Beyerdynamic. Frequency sweeps are simply useless I'm afraid.

While you don't exactly need an amp (they work fine out of an iPhone e.g.) they pair very well with the Fostex HP-P1 or HP-V1. The Beyerdynamic A200p is a cheap choice with DAC+amp thats also worth a look.

Enjoy!
